Avengers 1 was setting up "I wanna gently caress Death" Thanos too, so it was veto'd by management probably sometime around GotG if I had to guess. They also never bothered to set up Death as specific personification of a concept either. So it would still be confusing if Thanos was horny for the idea of the cessation of life.

Before Infinity War Thanos just sits around on his arse getting betrayed constantly. They pretty much had to start from scratch since they'd gone out of their way to avoid making him threatening or memorable.

its kind of funny how despite all the grand claims of a ~never before seen interconnected narrative~ the plot of infinity war/endgame basically is not set up at all in advance and they still had to do villainous motivations, etc. in the final films anyway

I couldn’t get over how they debuted Thanos as way more accurate to the comics (blue, in armor) and then made him into a California Raisin reject. It would have been easier to just have Thanos be a power hungry tyrant. Snap half the galaxy, rule over the traumatized other half. Instead they tried to give him a weird tragic past that ends with him getting pummeled to dust anyway.

Saw a tweet pointing out Granny Goodness in that recent trailer and was utterly baffled. That's Granny? That tiny whispy waif? Comic movies are utterly terrified of being weird in the slightest.

I don't think that's really irrational at all. There's a good reason why most of those designs have hung on for years and it's not because an entire industry have just been so in love with Jack Kirby that they're terrified to to ever try and change things (because they have, on occasion, done different incarnations, shapes and forms of these characters.) But it's weird to take an iconic or traditional design and just not do that. Especially if it's like, the big debut of the character in another medium and not a weird side piece where you're like, doing an alternate universe take. By and large Snyder's getting away with it, as dramatic as that sounds, because the characters in this case are far less known to the mainstream. but if you made a Superman movie and just turned Superman into Optimus Prime from the bayformers movies and said "No it's totally the same character, see! The prevailing wave of criticism is that the designs look like graphics card box art, if that isn't low art for the 2000s I'm not sure what is. They're not four-colour pop art ripped straight from the page - like, say, half the designs in Watchmen - but they're not middle of the road either.
