rm -rf /

will delete the file. i consider the deletion of the rest of your filesystem a net positive for these forums as a whole

not a real answer but if I have trouble trying to figure out how to manipulate a file because of a weird filename then I just fire up python to rename it to 'deleteme'

ah this is cool:

rm "-h"
rm: invalid option -- 'h'
Try 'rm ./-h' to remove the file '-h'.
Try 'rm --help' for more information.

except that I can just call os.unlink

The real answer is to use ctrl-v ctrl-m to insert '^M'. Encase in single quotes

i actually know nothing about gentoo aside from the fact that most of the people who use it are probably on some kind of trafficking watchlist so uhhh someone fill me in i guess
from what ive read it seems similar to arch but that might just be the people who use it rather than the distro itself

You should install gentoo and use it for a week and report back

or install it on a VM (make sure you allocate a ton of ram and all your processors) if you don't really want to go all the way

so i might try installing it on that if i can find a charging lead that fits it

To be incredibly honest, I don't really know if 30 GB is enough to install Gentoo because it needs to download and install packages from source, and also keep around development headers and etc. Especially if you want to use a graphical environment and not just run a barebones apache server or something.

But yeah, please try it out and let us know how it goes.

I helped run a lab that ran 100% gentoo on servers and workstations for MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE. To be fair, this was literally early 2000s (when SSE and etc registers and instructions were brand new, so it could have arguably been useful) and the it staff were all volunteers (so no impact on the budget if they work long hours)

I even wrote an ebuild but I had to give it to someone else to submit it because I did not (and still do not) have any gentoo dev cred
