Some people view the existence of information they do not immediately find useful (or already know) as a sort of personal attack. The idea that you can just let information be and that it may be useful to other people is just completely alien to them. So they react with great hostility to any topics that are not things they have habitually discussed in their lives, or updated conceptions of those topics.

It's literally because they believe that being gay is a choice made by sinful/evil people and that it's being done to perpetuate a greater evil or destroy the moral foundation or whatever of America or Western civilization. You have edge cases who don't see it as a choice who are often proponents of conversion therapy or whatever because they still see it as a moral evil/wrong that threatens America. There's also a massive propaganda campaign by right wing media to lie about LGBT people as much as possible, and some people fall for it. Stuff like public schools having simple sex education for young kids to teach them things like "You shouldn't let someone try and touch your body, some people fall in love with people of the same gender and that's okay" turns into "Schools are showing GAY PORNO to kindergartners to indoctrinate them!"

No, that's objectively untrue as a person who knows many, many people who have/are applying to college professor jobs. And I got told I was a lying liberal cuck and the 'evidence was everywhere'. When I posted several links to college professor applications (none of which had the question) he just pivoted and said it came 'later in the process'.
