Abusing the consecutive fight items seems pretty broken. Just got my sixth job and I've nearly mastered 3 jobs for each character.

idk why you'd want to grind so much so early tho

I ground out Freelancer on everyone because more JP now now NOW but other then that I'm just rolling along doing whatever. Monk feels nice and meaty right now, and I have plenty of hi potions to pour down someone's throat if I want them to Firebird 4 times in a row. It's nice. Black Mage feels kinda wimpy though at around the desert region?

When do I start getting more special moves for everyone? Do I gotta find another crystal? And what do I do with all these dwarves teeth?

Yeah, the special moves seem to unlock for a character when you find another crystal

I get the impression a lot of people really hate the game's aesthetic and that that this is coloring perception of the game in general.

I actually like the aesthetic for whatever reason, but it's apparently making some people completely incapable of enjoying anything connected to characters/plot.

edit: I like the option to increase battle speed. Grinding isn't so bad when the battles happen so fast, and I haven't tried these lure items that supposedly make things easier.

I'm trying to avoid grinding and the Berserker boss wiped the floor with me. I adjusted my classes and set up and they still wiped the floor with me. I had level up two more times to just have enough HP to survive one physical attack with bard songs up. Once I had that it was still a struggle but prevailed.

Holy poo poo I am not touching this game on hard mode.

That boss and the previous one got me turn the game from hard to normal. They loving stomped my rear end on hard.

I had to do the slowest kill in the world on that spoilered boss because full defense was the only way I could stay do it safely. It got easier after I realized that you can purge his berserk off him though.

Is there a way to get more specific info on some of these skills? Like the Monk's thing that does higher damage in exchange for lower hit rate; it would be good to know exactly how much more damage and exactly how much less hit rate.

Some people (most reviewers from what I've seen) think the style looks very bad in higher resolution and that the characters look "dead-eyed."

I don't really get it, but it's apparently at least a somewhat common reaction.

I'm up to that boss that the reviewer was complaining about earlier in the thread and I think they were right. There is a boss that is immune to all physical damage and can only be damaged by purely elemental attacks. I'm stuck in a long battle of attrition where I'll eventually win because my characters all regenerates MP, but it is going to take awhile. I hope I'm just being a huge idiot here, because this seems like a very poorly designed encounter.

It's definally a lot like Bravely Default/Second in that boss fights are less about huge slugfests and more about weird traits and gimmicks that can be trivialized with a particular setup. Then you have poo poo like the Gambler where unironically all about luck.

The game gave me a choice between two areas so I'm wondering if the asterisk I got from this this fight will trivialize the the other boss fight and visa versa.

If the attack has a picture of a weapon in its description it did zero damage. The Vanguard's first weak earth elemental attack that delays worked because it uses your shield and just has the earth elemental symbol, The second one they get that actually does good damage did not work because it uses your weapon. The boss seemed to technically be immune to all weapon types.

Most of the bosses at that point of the game have a massive stack of immunities. You can use a monk with fists, or release most types of beasts, these count as non-typed physical damage and ignore the immunities. You can also catch some skeletons from the magic lab, these guys have a terrible hit rate but will do 50% of the target's remaining HP in damage, so throwing a few at bosses at the start will carve off most of their HP.

I also figured I'd try to cheese that rare spawn on the beach with the old man's help until I examined it and saw the HP, and the 1k damage attacks. :stare:

I was surprised that there are two asterisk themes this time around. They're both good but the one from the original demo is my favorite of the two. Extremely good "get pumped up to kick rear end" music.

So something to note about the asterisk bosses in this game (or maybe it's the humanoid class of enemy in general?) is that all the very status effects work on them just as well as it works on you! I know some RPGs have a habit of saying it but as i'm writing this i'm fighting Prince Castor and because i went out of my way to use Beast Master and went to that weird mansion place to pick up a bunch of the big wasps and caith sith's in there. Said spoilered boss is currently frozen while poisoned AND paralyzed!

Also a battle system note that the auto counters from enemies don't activate as long as the enemy is prevented from moving in some way (frozen, stop, paralysis) and this guy normally reacts to getting hitt with water and fire with a counter. He currently can't do it :D

Same, all the posts wailing about how different it is had me worried but aside from the turn order thing (which seems like a really surprising complaint given how hand-holdy showing turn order is) it plays very much the same. I'd much rather have on-field enemies than random encounters, they're ridiculously easy to juke if you don't want to fight them.

Is there any other online functionality that shows up later besides the boat quest things? I have to admit it'll be a little disappointing if you can summon someone else's super moves like in the first two games.

Edit: finally beat it, in think I was less frustrated with the fight and more just with having to skip 6 cut scenes each time I had to redo it.

You can buy two types of "damage all enemies" items in the shop in the first town. They pretty much melt the first asterisk bosses.

Aside from that, they both have elemental weaknesses so if you examine them and make at least two of your characters black mages you should be able to take them down pretty easily.

Some major game company’s review claimed you couldn’t hit bosses with status effects and I almost refunded the game (I read the review between boss 1 and buying the game). So I’m really glad this isn’t the case.

It's not 100% chance or anything but it'll work if you throw enough bees at the problem. Poison in particular can be a bit tricky for it to apply but once it does it stays on for a long time and does probably some kind of percentage of health. The description says "small" but it was ticking for 400-500 of his health every turn. Definitely very useful.

You just have to beat the people in the casino. It is doable as soon as you unlock the game. It shows who to beat if you track the side quest.

There’s a character in the beginning that can heal/revive your characters an unlimited amount of times. So you can go ahead and just run around the map taking advantage of that and leveling Freelancer. Using stuff like insect bait you can stack up fights.

Now Freelancer gets the JP Up skill at level 9 and JP Up and Up at level 12 (mastery). If you stack those abilities together you can get up to x1.7 JP. Then just go ahead and keep grinding it out with the multiple battles and you’ll level up the other job you have at the time (black mage) real quick.

You can also use forage constantly in fights with enemies and find a bunch of JP Orbs that help as well. Easier to do this when that other character is in your party, since he attacks too and you don’t have to worry about his health. So you can just leave everyone to forage while getting those multiple fights with bait and get tons of JP orbs and other items too. Like a lot of items.
