I think people like the chapos and hasan and such are unquestionably really useful gateway drugs to the left. but I mean, once you’re in you’ve gotta start leveling yourself up to the point where you can be a bit critical about their analysis, because they are not always trustworthy lol. I think Matt usually has pretty solid reads on things but still, better to treat these guys as entertainment first

If I were a Chapo I'd also try to do some more respectable stuff on the side so I had something to put on my CV / somewhere to go when the gravy train runs out or the group implodes due to disagreements about a Chapo themed craft beer place or whatever.

Probably the wrong thread for it but there's concrete, damning, silver bullet evidence out there supporting claims of uyghur genocide right? Like it's definitely not the one dude who admitted there was no evidence but said he could find some if the BBC paid him, but it's gotta be something big if questioning it is bannable? Really the main problem arises because genocide to Americans is completely different to genocide as it is used with reference to Uyghurs. In the letter, it is true (cultural genocide), but in the spirit we have come to conceive it as, it is not. That's why the right wing thing of "China is the new Nazi's" falls flat on its face because they are not heir to the cultural/govermental lineage which in time helped give rise to the Nazi brand we are familiar with. the saddening part about the whole uyghur response in the west is that it is completely disconnected from two key concepts: Will our actions make things more better than worse? Will our actions save lives? If the response was “the US must open our borders, and negotiate away things China wants in exchange for allowing Uyghurs to emigrate to the US” that would at least be actually trying to save people. But instead the response is all about punishing China somehow, either assuming that will make them stop, or in a sense of justice unrelated to reality. Either way, it is very iffy to imagine that sanctioning China will do much in the way of helping anyone and always risks hurting people. If we “punish” some Chinese officials but don’t stop whatever evils are occurring, isn’t that just making us complicit? If you’re someone who thinks this is or will be as bad as the Holocaust, how on earth could you advocate for sanctions against Germany or banning Himmler from banking in the US? Why isn’t giving China concessions to save Uyghur lives never considered an option?
