It doesn’t sound super tricky to implement either if the simulation is cached ahead of time (for a limited number of sim frames) as a 3d texture or texture array which is then applied to a height map in real time (with interpolation between sim frames). Time travel powerups, like slowdown, rewind or ”future prediction vision” or something should be possible too.

Cardiovorax posted:Oh, now there's an interesting idea. It definitely shouldn't be difficult to run the simulation a little bit ahead and then overlay a transparent Precog Mode on top of the actual terrain. That would be a neat mechanic - not even purely helpful necessarily, because that kind of multi-layered wiggling going on all over your field of vision would be disorienting as hell to watch. The way I see it working right now would be that it would occur during bullet time so player has some time to adjust and the visuals would shift that current time fade outs a bit and future time would only show a simplified outline of the water or something so there’s less distractions. Somewhat similar to how modern sneaking games have vision modes where AIs movement trajectories and LOS are shown. But I’m severely getting ahead of myself here... We’ll see if I actually bother taking it further beyond a fun little generator toy stage, heh.

Oh, just thinking out loud because I enjoy that kind of "mixed blessing" powerup. Do I pick up the FutureSightTM and possibly lose my way if I can't read the effect correctly, or do I pass it by and trust in my own ability to predict where the next channel is going to open based on experience? It adds a bit of complexity to the decision.

It adds a bit of complexity to the decision. I think it's just endless mode and eventually a gap just traps you. But it would be really cool if it even synched up to player provided music, like it something in the scenes reacts to your audio output almost like a visualizer. It's like the moving images in the Harry Potter Universe, now I'm waiting for an AI generated magic wand. Edit: Don't post when tired or you end up with asnine one-liners like this. I think the original point I was going to make before my exhausted brain forgot where I was going was that online publications could use technology like this to animate any still image they want. Though that would probably look absolutely uncanny and hideous if done to this standard. Tombot has a new favorite as of 17:01 on Mar 1, 2021 |

Imagine that you are a bald god. You can create a god-uniform with epaulets on the shoulders, or you can have a cloud hover behind you at all times, simulating epaulets. Persons viewing you from the front would not be able to tell whether your uniform has epaulets, but persons viewing from any other angle would know your secret. Would you punish these people?

But does this mean that the computer-generated essays are good, or just that the standards for a passing grade are surprisingly low?

Makes sense. Essay writing is just taking 3-5 tertiary sources and mad libbing them together until the plagiarism check doesn't trigger. To complete the thought you could probably make a fool proof essay writer by building a plagiarism check feedback loop kind of how Deep Dream works so if your GPT results over fit anywhere you pick it up, throw it out, and slot something new in. E. Although coming at it from the other angle, I wonder if there's any room to do anything like use GPT in reverse/feedback Deep Dream style to take a human written paper and determine how likely all the sources are properly attributed zedprime has a new favorite as of 14:53 on Mar 3, 2021 |

Not quite procedurally generated, but the AI involvement makes it close enough to the topic, I'd say https://twitter.com/moyix/status/1367575109305794563?s=19

The hilarious thing is, it makes total sense when you think about it not in terms of what is actually being depicted, but in terms of how an AI is trained. Who's willing to bet that a decent portion of the training set for iPods consisted of photographs of packaged iPods with a big "iPod" front and center, printed on a white background?
