I'm finally getting around to starting DQ11 myself. Would anyone recommend if I should play it in the normal 3D mode or it is fine to go 2D for the whole thing? Any other recommendations as far as difficulty level or draconic settings for the first playthrough?

Personally I think the standard difficulty is fine. It's not very hard but there's still some challenge in the later parts. Stronger Monsters is fun, too, and you can turn it off later so there's no risk in starting with it on if you're curious. Worth noting that you can turn off Draconic options later, but you can't turn them on, so if you think you'll want Stronger Monsters or the Less XP From Weak Monsters ones on, turn them on at the start. You can always turn them off later.

I preferred 3D mode myself because it's a really nice-looking game, but AFAIK there's nothing wrong with going 2D the whole way if that's what you prefer. You can switch back and forth if you want to try both.

One thing to be aware of 2D vs 3D.
2D has traditional turn based choose everyone’s actions first, then turn order is determined and characters do their actions on their turn.
3D determines the order each round first and you choose a characters action when their turn comes up. You still don’t know on a given characters turn who is acting next, but it makes healing in particular way easier.

Auto-battle options are also more helpful in 2D because the AI doesn’t choose an action for a character until it’s that characters’ turn.

2D mode has random encounters doesn't it? Aside from that, I guess it's just a flavor thing. I should buy the PC definitive edition.

Try hard monsters if you're a seasoned dq player. You can always turn it off just know you can't turn it back on. Status effects are very strong to help with that.

Does hard monsters make the bosses harder, my main issue with DQ 11 was every single ight that's not a scripted boss fight is super easy and boring and then the boss fights would knock me on my rear end. if the random encounters were harder but the bosses were the same that would probably teach me o play the game better.

I started DQ 11S earlier in the week for the first time and I think putting Shypox and Super Shypox on has made my first run rather memorable, I can't help but laugh when all four of my team gets Shypox'd so the enemies just beat on them.

Play it in 3D and use reduced XP on easy enemies, maybe super strong enemies if you want it to be harder.

Play it in 2D for your second playthrough. I enjoyed both and 2D was a great excuse to replay it since it feels so different.

Shypox is loving awful because it’s just extra rng to gently caress you over with no opposing benefit.

I beat the original game on PS4 without any difficulty settings and I'm about halfway through the switch version with Stronger Monsters and Weak Monsters No Exp. The bosses are tougher but not massively so. Some of the earlier bosses gave me trouble but nothing that couldn't be solved with some +2/+3 forged items. Past the early bosses they haven't felt noticeably harder. A few spots gave me trouble but if you're using the full options the game offers you (especially including talent respecs) the game never gets unfair. (Just remember to get the cannon before you fight the giant squid lol.)

Imo stronger monsters is one of the best RPG difficulty adjustments I've ever seen, and is definitely the way the game should be played for anyone that has already played and beaten a DQ game. It makes the game feel a lot like DQ3 ib terms of difficulty.

Also DQ Tact is okay for a freemiun casino monsters game but I can't enjoy it knowing there's a Terry's Wonderland remake phone port they could have translated instead. There's no game I would rather have on my phone than a DQM game, heck I've got a hundred hour DWM2 rom save file and it's by far the best game on my phone.

3D mode. 2D is a nice nostalgic addition, but it is vastly inferior for a first playthrough.

There's a 3DS port of it that cut out a good amount of filler from what I heard. Never played the PSX version to compare.

Yeah, if you have a 3DS or a PC capable of running an emulator the 3DS version is the best way to play DQ7 in 2021. There's a Japan-only mobile port of the remake, IIRC, but there's no translation.

Get slyvando hustle dance then whoever you like. It eventually falls off for healing throughput but by then the real healer more than make up for it. It's on the bottom half of his tree I think. Do not underestimate oomph.

Veronica's good because she talks smack while blowing up all the riff raff.

Erik can become a boss destroyer with his status effect -> dagger stabby stab abilities. Sylvando can set these up too.

No one's really garbage so long as you focus on using the build you gave them. Hard monsters kind of forces you to use their 'in vocation' build though. Game makes it fairly obvious what each role the character has.

I’m enjoying the hell out of DQ11 so far on the PC. The last DQ game I played was Dragon Warrior Monsters on the Gameboy wayyyyy back, and I was wondering if any of the later monsters/bosses from that one make an appearance in DQ11 (assuming the answer isn’t super spoiler-y)? Some of the ones I remember are this big lion thing (KingLeo?), a grizzly bear looking thing, Divinegon(?), Coatl, or any of the bosses!

It does make the bosses harder, but it's not that bad. There's a couple of that tend to give some people trouble, but I didn't have too much of a problem with them. The final post-game super bosses were the only one that really kicked my rear end.

9 is a little too childish for my tastes, and that's saying a lot since I love the series.

I can't really think of any particular moments from that game that impressed me. The only cool thing was having all the equipment show up on your DQIII-style party members, and I suppose getting rid of random encounters.

Same. But DQ9 also added the exact kind of co-op mechanic I've wanted in RPGs every since running Phoenix cave and Kefka's tower in FF6. "What if we had an RPG where multiple players could run around in the world and jump in to help others fight monsters or go do their own thing" is a thought I had in 1994 and it's a crime other games haven't copied the mechanic since DQ9 showed it can and does work.

Does it fix the problems with not being able to find the shards if you miss one?

And is there a way to avoid an unfinishable state if you do something out of order on the tower near the end? I loved DQ7 but never finished it because of those 2 reasons.

This is why MMOs exist. DQX specifically, to keep on thread topic. If you've never played one, give one of the Big3 a try - WoW, ESO, FF14. But yeah, it's a shame DQX has yet to be localized. I'd be interested in trying it out.

Yeah, I never played the original but don’t ever remembering stumbling on that, they added some quality of life features (a radar and also an NPC in the shrine) that let you look for them better.

Might also be that if Nintendo funded it or did some of the localization themselves that Squenix doesn't have the full rights to the localization and can't just do whatever they want with it.

I've been wanting to replay DQ4/5/6 and was wondering what the best ways to do that on a TV are. I played through the DS versions of all of them but don't have a handle on which ports are based on which versions and remakes from which platform...is there an answer other than "just use an emulator box"?

Bongo Bill
Jan 17, 2012

If you have a way of hooking up a mobile device to a TV screen, that might work. It's not outside the realm of possibility that 4-6 will get ported to Switch someday, but at present there are not even rumors to that effect, let alone news.

If you have a modded Wii U you could try them as VC injections on that. The PS2 remake of DQ5 is neat and has a translation, though it also has no Debora.

You can share screen with a TV+laptop/PC over wifi with a slew of modern TVs. They can be finicky depending on the device setup but it works sometimes.

This is what I settled on, seems like the easiest path and I already have a modded Wii U in the closet, just need to remember how to navigate file systems and get ROMs loading and crap. Can't wait to do it though! Playing through 1/2/3 switch versions has got me in a DQ mood and I plan on playing them all again, along with finally playing IX
