This discussion is very useful because it led to me googling "who owns a dead body" and learning about a court case where a guy's post-death instructions were ignored because he specified that a person was to be given his body and then to cremate him. In most jurisdictions no one has the right to own a dead body, the person responsible for disposing of it simply has the right to possession of it in the meantime. So they never gave the body away and there was no chosen disposition specified in any other clause, so the executor just buried it to avoid paying for cremation. So, you know, make sure those final testaments are airtight.

Curious where this was that burial was the less expensive option Unless it was just "buried it myself in the woods" or whatever

I learned that by watching Caitlin Doughty on YouTube. It's why you can't take home a loved one's skull as you can't technically own it an no mortician will break the law to let you keep it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKd3zhMFmGc Speaking of creations, this was a wild story about a guy who wanted to be cremated in the desert, but his family wanted him buried in Texas to get the rights to his estate, so his friends kidnapped his body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYuNKbxnZDc She has a few videos about disasters that would fit this thread. Edit: Caitlin is a pro-follow, even (especially?) if death makes you feel icky.

Yeah, it seems like hearses are primarily (exclusively?) for taking the casket from the funeral home to the grave site. Well, for that and for old goth dudes trying to look cool in front of teenagers. In the last few funerals I attended, the funeral home was on the same property as the grave site. So you ended up having the hearse drive around 1/2 mile from the funeral home doors around a loop road to the grave, while all the guests just walked across the cemetery to meet them.

Yes, for transportation to the burial site from the funeral homehouse of worship. Most of the funeral homes I inspected used vans or large SUVs for all other transportation, usually painted all black and beautifully maintained. The hearse(s) could be used in a pinch.

Thinking about how carrying my uncle up and down about 16 stairs into/out of the church or carrying my aunt up a slippery hill in winter would fit in this thread.

One of my grandparents had a bunch of "Tap-A-Line" outlets installed above their kitchen counters. In addition to the obvious problems, the slots got so loose over time that you could easily shock yourself by brushing your arm against it.
