Okay - so I've gone through Warbird's GoogleVM instructions to the letter, but whenever I try and start the server and check the details, it comes back as 'stopped', which is why I'm not sure it's working. The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is that none of the game binaries seem to exist - I can't find any file structure that's like Iron Gate/Valheim/ etc (which I was looking for so I could find somewhere to drop in a pre-existing world) - just a lot of stuff connected with vhserver. Am I missing something here?

Sorry for what might be a stupid question. I'm not a programmer!

edit: it's this ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds/ that doesn't seem to exist anywhere on the VM.

edit: it's alive! for anyone wondering, the default Google VM might not be good enough - I had to bump up to 'standard' so it wouldn't crash on start.

Glad to hear you got it working! Sounds like you sorted it out, but migrating is a matter of moving over the world file to the vm (usually via SCP/WinSCP) and changing the launch parameters to point at the existing world. This guy details the process:

Thanks! I managed to move it over. For anyone else in the same longboat as me, if you use Google Cloud's own web based terminal (which I'd recommend if you're a windows user as copy and pasting is much easier), you click the little cog in the corner of the terminal window, which will allow you to upload files. Then, you'll need to use the linux 'cp' command to copy them into the right place.

Edit: I've never been a server admin before. This is exciting. Is there any way I can add a message of the day to display a load of passive aggressive text when people log in?

So here are client side mods I'd give my recommendation for people to try out as quality of life improvements.

First you'll need the mod loader.
https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/denikson/BepInExPack_Valheim/

Then the mods themselves starting with what I think are the biggest QoL improvements.

Faster teleportation - reduces the portal load times by half and dungeons are instant transitions
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/59
Boat exploration radius - If you want to actually map out coastlines from your boat and not just leave little thin lines across a vast ocean, made exploration a lot more fun.
https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/nearbear/BiggerBoatMapExploreRadius/
Remember IP damnit - saves login info to the last dedicated server you used, must have if you play on one.
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/41?tab=description
Craft from containers - let's your crafting benches and other buildings pull resources from your nearby chests, huge timer saver and convenience to see how much of everything you have on hand.
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/40
Map sync - share your exploration with your friends if they also have the mod.
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/42?tab=description
More slots and equipment slots - the default inventory space is extremely limited by the time you are out of the stone age and you want to actually have room to try different weapons, you are still limited by carry weight but a single dandelion or resin won't cause you to have to do inventory management before continuing on, I right now just use equipment slots but more slots would be a good alternative, or you can run both at once, it's up to you.
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/103
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/92?tab=bugs
Crop replant - greatly improves the speed of harvesting and replanting your crops and helps with the tedium of doing it over and over.
https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/99?tab=description

There are more mods out there but these I feel give the biggest enjoyment improvements to the game without being cheaty or differing from the base game in any real way and mostly just saving you time from the more tedious time wastes.

Sadly no, there aren’t ways to dink around with a running world via the CLI right now. Though that may come. If you want the real sysadmin experience set up some alerts so your life can be interrupted by umpteen sources yelling at you to fix your poo poo.

Also be sure to set up the cron jobs (automated tasks that run at a given interval) that are listed in lgsm’s docs/instructions. Half the reason to use lgsm is to abstract out and automate a good deal of the management work.

Tower shields are good at blocking but the problem specifically with things like wolves is they attack fast, so if you don't parry them then you won't get an opening.

We're lousy with eggs! Got too many eggs, more eggs than we can ever spend and nothing to spend 'em on. I think we got spoiled first three bosses being easy to locate, been all over three big mountains now and still not one sight of a boss-rune-marker.

I had my best/worst death last night. Died to some wolves when I was stuck in my menu trying to drop some crap to be able to run away or act. Fine, eat some grub, pop a mead, run back to corpse. Whoops, stranded self renaming portal to new temporary camp. Ok back to home, into the right portal. Walking over this massive mountain, my mead runs out andschugged the one from chest assuming I'd have my clothes back by now. I'm on an 80 tick timer, no stamina, wolf chasing, I'm at 15 health counting down like new years, using my sliver of stamina whenever to roll forward to avoid doggie. I get my corpse back with 6 health to spare, manage to pop on cloak and chug a health potion, fend off wolf, hooray!

It was an adrenaline rush for sure but maybe that's the problem. I'm back to normal, full health, armoured, good to go. Then I see a drake, which are pushovers if you've got any frost-immunity or have mastered "walking slightly to the left-or-right." This particular one was low to the ground, caught up on some jagged rock or terrain. I decide I'll just sprint at it, jump, and give it a running-jump-punch, if nothing else it'll look cool.

Welp, I reckon I just took point-blank ice-blast to the face the same moment I swung my fist and I was gibbed in the air. I probably would've died from overshooting the rock and falling off cliff if I wasn't killed mid-air. Worst part was my buddy didn't even see it and he thought I was being figurative when I said I was going to punch this dumb lowflying lizard.

Have you had any issues with the equipment slots one? I keep reading bugs about how it deletes armor, which sounds annoying.

I use a chunk of the rest already, that's a good list.
I also liked Clock, changed to fuzzy, so you get like 'early morning' a the top of the screen. https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/85. Discard inventory items is solid, too. https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/45

I'm using Vortex, which installs a different version of BepInEx, I believe. I haven't needed to do anything besides installed the Unstripped DLLs it suggests so far.

The only issue I've had is when I had a full inventory when I died and when I went back to my marker I had to dump out 8 junk items onto the ground to make space for the now invisible items on my death marker after hitting take-all, I could see that bit of jank being the cause of the issue for some people and a issue if you died in a still hostile area, the more slots mod is probably the better one to use but I like having a character loadout.

After Bonemass wrecked me a few times, I did the old Rocky routine and beefed up from troll hide armor to maxing out the iron mace, shield, and iron armor. went back and beat bonemass, him being stuck on the terrain in a black forest didn't hurt.

Using an Iron sledge to wreck the ooze/ skeleton adds was super helpful.

If you can't afford to upgrade your iron mace or whatever weapon, don't forget that you can hit a rock and skill up your weapons to deal more damage.

I had a similar problem. Found a bossless mountain range with about half a dozen eggs that I carted down and put on the boat. Finally found a tower with the rune and the boss was a nearly two-hour sail down south near the edge of the world.

What an adventure! Had to backtrack to avoid the plains, encountered my first sea serpents, explored The Mistlands and the Ashlands and when I finally got settled and scouted the mountain range, found there were three eggs already in the area. So I’m thinking that’s probably a procgen rule.

Everything that is time based progresses while it's unloaded, the reason taming doesn't progress is that you actually have to be physically near the animals to "acclimatize" them. I just made a pen for some boars right next to the building I was constructing, they were tame before I finished.

I think they can eventually go wild again too, either with hunger or not being present. I initially made a house right next to the standing stones and had been using that as a base, including a hogfarm, then ran off into the woods and built myself a walled in logging/mining base. After exploring the woods for awhile I came back and the hogs were wild again.

Is there any reason not to use the stones as my nexus for a portal network? And is there any reason not to make a portal network anyway?

E: so far I've made those two bases and I think I'll try to turn the stones into a hub/tavern/port thing now that I have some ability to terraform with pickaxes and hoes, but not really doing too much manufacturing there. If I'm not near a base, will it get attacked? And will I eventually be able to get defenses that stop trolls? And do I actually need to build walls everywhere anyway?

I think those cases are just bugs, other than not getting consumables back, like resin from torches and wood from campfires. I forget if the same no-consumables-back rule applies to cauldrons, and I haven’t got far enough in the game to build anything with iron or stone so there might be more of that pattern later.

Hm. I know that forges will drop any unprocessed coal and ore, and kilns will drop wood. Campfires will not drop unburned wood, though, and it sounds like torches don't give back unburned resin.

I wonder if that's a bug or intended design.
