lol One of the people calling him "self important" makes basically the same kind of stuff as Hbomb. I know saying someone is "just jealous" is kind of a thought-terminating cliche, but a ton of the nobodies calling Hbomb "self important" are just butthurt that alot of people consider Hbomb and his work important while they aren't important at all.

It's just one of those types of insults that reveal more about the person flinging them than the target of said insult. It's like the Patton Oswalt bit about sellouts where he says he used to call so many people sellouts, but then one day he realized he was just mad no one was buying what he was selling.

Shadi is probably fine overall but he does skew a bit...chud-y isn't the word, but very much Medieval Nerd. His book is very grimdark ~realistic fantasy~ from what I gather but most of the time when he engages with armory topics he tries to keep it fair - there's a video where he argues against an alt-right take that women couldn't beat men in a swordfight, for instance. So like, exert caution? I think 90% of his content is just talking about historical weapons and armor.

Yeah, I don't know why so many people follow him and Dore. There are so many communists on twitter that you can follow that don't express really garbage views and occasionally stumble upon some social democratic take. The baggage isn't worth the result.

But yeah, to tie it back into Hbomberguy it just caught me off guard. You can spend your time however you want but if you hate the guy so much why even care if his tweet was a bit hypocritical? So what if he has a two hour video gushing about Bloodborne or one critically dismantling Fallout 3? Just block him and move on with your life. I think a lot of these folks would feel a whole lot better if they bought themselves a journal. It helps with the whole screaming into the void thing without subjecting the public to it.

Yeah it's a good vid and the show itself isn't good but his 20 minutes on how the most important aspect of the original stories was that they were episodic seems...dumb? Like I don't think it's the actual backbone of why they were good or why people liked them.

Also the way he treats the original stories is a little precious, which is something that's come up in his videos a lot. The RWBY vid is full of this kind of Adoration of something/someone (Specifically monty's original animations and his part of RWBY) that it kind of twists his frame of stuff in a way that's but hard to agree with and seems a little skewed.

His Sherlock definitely put a nice finger on that growing uneasy feeling as was watching the show, even if the books to my recollection also had the habit of Sherlock pulling magic knowledge out of thin air.

It was also good for really putting a face to the narrative trick of "don't ever pay off a mystery, just keep edging the audience and then swap in a new mystery".

The thing I disagree with was his assertion that Sherlock holmes stories should be about the mysterieeeees. Imo Sherlock was always a bit of a Gary Stu even in the original stories, and making him the main focus as some sort of modern day superhero sleuth makes sense since that imo can be a large part of his appeal (as Sherlock clearly proves). Some people just liked the focus being on this (hypothetically) sexy super anti-social detective on the spectrum clowning on people, and that's fine. I do agree that they took it too far when the solutions to the puzzles where absolutely loving bonkers though. And like others said, the way they constantly teased certain developments only to dumpster them entirely was just obnoxious

Yeah, I was reading a complete works of Sherlock Holmes when I watched that video. It was very good overall explained a lot of why I bounced off the show when all my friends loved it. Harris was right that an appeal to the stories was learning neat tricks and figuring out how they the scheme worked. But you could only do that for some of the stories. Quite a few of them were incomprehensible until after Sherlock sums everything up at the end, and honestly one or two make the boomerang seem kinda sensible when placed side by side. My favourite is the one where its revealed that the killer has won the allegiance of a totally made up group of pygmy savages who lived off the coast of India. And is using their child like bodies and secret native venoms to kill his betrayers good luck figuring that one out before the river boat chase

I enjoyed the Pathologic vid a lot and so grabbed it when it came on ps4, will wait a bit for some patches before starting to crack that nut.

Yeah I like a lot of the Sherlock video but he's wrong about the original stories being fair play mysteries. The boomerang bit really isn't too far from some of the original stories.

The actual worst "mystery" in the show is the one about the missing train carriage, which goes something like this

London Underground Expert: A person vanished from a train in between two stations, and there's nothing between two stations. I've checked.
much later
Sherlock: What if there was something between those two stations
London Underground Expert: I just checked, and you're right!

It gets overshadows by lots of other stuff happening in the episode but as a mystery it's spectacularly unsatisfying.
