I love mitch jokes that weren't written by mitch. "when I'm at work I like to watch those videos of people who are really good at their jobs. It's Ironic."

I enjoy the idea that there was no room to fit any sort of "can you eat this" routine into the brain of the pelican so they just try to eat everything.

I saw a video once of a pelican scoop up a pigeon that was minding its own business and just swallow it whole, still thrashing around as it's going down. The only thing protecting you from pelicans is being bigger than them.

Since birds don't have hands (usually ) they investigate things by poking at them with their beaks. The pelicans aren't trying to eat any of those things, they're just trying to figure out what their deal is. Including if it's edible, yes, but if they were trying to eat it they'd be trying to pull it into their mouths, not just loosely biting at it. It's not like they're used to biting off chunks of stuff in general.

Seems pretty clear? Someone is very happy that a library is embarrassed because they needed to borrow something

Harvard is a snooty and rich university and by inference has a snooty and rich library that presumably prides itself on either owning or having extremely quick access to every text they might need. We assume they are more comfortable fielding requests for some of their vast collection to be loaned out than having to admit they don't have every written woro ever.
