I definitely get the sense that the focus on Xinjiang is an imperialist ploy and that Han Chauvinism is a problem in China. It's pretty similar to the Iran and Saudi Arabia situation in my eyes. As for the Stalin/Mao thing, even if one thinks thatthe vilification is overblown, defending their honour isn't that helpful. Passionate defenses of the Soviet Union won't help in the short term when building leftist movements.

The old bolsheviks are who he killed, Beria is who he made top cop, independent of anything to do with Trotsky that's about as much as I care about when assessing Stalin, I honestly don't see how anyone can see him as anything other than an opportunistic despot But history is weird and often shockingly unromantic and the mythology that swells from it rarely is grounded in reality and I generally don't find it too useful to argue the facts of the early 20th century with people who are brokebrained enough as I am to have thoughts about such things because they are almost completely unrepresented in the working class of the US
