I can understand why the show's running out of steam. They got popular by channeling the justified anger of the 2016 primaries, Clinton getting put on a pedestal and then getting stomped by Trump. Until the 2020 primaries it made sense to skewer Democrats and present alternatives (Bernie) since a takeover of the party seemed like a longshot but possible. Getting crushed as decisively as we did meant there wasn't much reason to keep harping on about Democrats (see: the succ zone threads) because those levers of power are foreclosed. I still really like some of their older episodes, movie reviews, etc. but since the primaries the show has been understandably in the doldrums

I think it's also that if you're a power user on these forums and twitter then you're probably already keyed into whatever they're talking about in a given episode, and may have already seen jokes of a similar nature. Any given episode might have a bit more novelty for the non-terminally online. I find it mostly enjoyable as something playing in the background but it's definitely not the same as it used to be. That's kind of the nature of things

As a bit they should get like five people nobody's ever heard of to do an episode, call it New Chapo.

what?

they pretty much planned the show around the idea that it’d be a Clinton administration that they’d be skewering

also it sounds like you’re saying the show may not as well exist if it can’t facilitate direct change. it’s an entertainment product

also the primary episodes with all the earnest bernie boosting albeit well meaning were the worst the show has ever been

Note that I said they became popular by channeling post-2016 election anger, not that they planned the show around it. I know they had to make last-minute changes to their election night show because they assumed a Clinton win. I don't think they had any social responsibility in terms of direct action because as you say, it's entertainment. I'm saying that the anger after 2016 and the desire for an alternative was an animating factor to the show that is now gone, hence why it seems kind of listless and mediocre now.

I can go back and relisten to eps from 2017-2018 real easy, but as soon as Bernie announced his campaign the eps basically aged really poorly up until, really, the white fragility episode

i think it's sort of expected that most bernie-era episodes have aged badly, for very obvious reasons. probably the worst period was post-bernie up to white fragility though. i actually saw them live in Sacramento back in Feb 2020 just before the lockdowns started and before super tuesday. even ran into some goons like Siljimonster. it was a great show but i def wouldn't want to listen to any of them again

are matt's vlogs still good? im probably about ~2 months behind on them. some of the immediate post-election ones were really fuckin good.

THS
Sep 15, 2017

matt had a few v-logs on books about reconstruction last month but seems to have put a pause on them for the time-being.

probably for the best because he is trying to focus on actually writing something coherent and he’s well aware that he uses the v-logs as a crutch to do unfocused wilding out, which is usually entertaining, sometimes enlightening, but not at all productive

The movie is at least in the vein of chapo classic. Some bullshit political documentary.

matt and felix are at their most energetic and happiest when talking media. Time For My Stories has been great, so that's ok. Will seems a bit de-energized (for obvious reasons with dad dying and everything) and the cumtown bit was def the happiest he's sounded in awhile.

Idk what you people are talking about. Sure the last couple of weeks have been a little weak but the episode a few weeks back with Libby Watson was Chapo running at full power and better than most of their output from last year. Plus they had that interview with the guy getting hosed over by Chevron and another Adam Curtis interview.

THS
Sep 15, 2017

people have been saying chapo is running out of steam or whatever for the last 4 years, every time there are a couple weeks of average episodes, followed by a long discussion of who is now enemies with who, if matt is divorced, whether or not amber will ever come back, how depressed felix is, etc. it is clockwork

its funny listening to old chapo episodes because they get genuinely mad at random conservative opinion columnists and say poo poo like 'being very normal' and 'hellworld'. but they cant do that anymore because theres millions of people in the world including like half of this forum that made that sort of behaviour their whole personality so its old hat for a comedy podcast. new eps are perfectly on par imo especially the latest. you can tell the mood changed after the election in a good way

I remember cringing at them trying to keep morale up post-Super Tuesday. I understand why they did it (and don't think they were wrong to do so, since it was worth some last attempt to keep morale up), but it was pretty obvious at that point that there wasn't going to be any comeback.

I went to their San Diego show right after NV and going from that to "yeah this virus is everywhere, bernie's campaign is finished and we all have to stay inside for the next 2 months" in the span of a month was the most crushed I've felt in a long time

The past few months I have been enjoying the podcast more though. They've still got it I feel, just that it's different than the Trump era.
