Content from work today. For context, track one is closest to the camera, track two is farther. Trains run on the right. Train #80 was traveling northbound on track one and reached a new crossover switch that was installed in the summer of last year. The first four axles cleared the switch okay, but the fifth or six axle picked the switch, rode up off the rail, and then rode along the paver bricks for about 300 feet. Train #5 was traveling southbound on track two, and had stopped to service the station seen in the photo and was then struck by the derailed portion of train #80. This happened in the portion of the light rail system that is downtown, where all four lines converge to travel through the trunk before splitting again on the edges of downtown, so this royally hosed the entire system. This is the latest in a series of incidents involving those brand new switches. In two separate incidents, Operators have refused to take their trains through the switch because they found the points to be gapped and were concerned about this exact thing happening. It looked decent enough when I went through a few hours earlier, so I imagine it shifted as train #80 was already going through it.

Whenever you see a propane tank by the tracks, good bet it's there to run some switch heaters.  Here's the site on a better day, the pileup was at the corner of US 12 & County Line Rd outside of Gary. Looks to be right at a control point here, featuring a bunch of crossover switches. Good bet that a car had a thin wheel flange and picked open one of those switch points, or had stuck bolsters & didn't traverse the crossover well, or maybe it was bad trainhandling... (What I'm saying is that the track guys will say it wasn't a problem with the track)

I finally ditched light rail trains and went to a local shortline railroad to move freight around locally. While I was doing the new hire paperwork and some safety orientation, there were a few times that the manager I was working with had to step away for a moment to take phone calls, order certain equipment for me, and do other various, small tasks. During these times, I'd either step outside for a smoke or start reading poo poo that was posted on the walls. I found the SOFA reports from the last quarter outlining the various reportable injuries on railroads in the US. Additionally, there was an email from a regional FRA inspector asking railroad managers to also post this similar incident report from Canada to remind train crews to not be stupid. The report basically said that a new conductor was being trained, and was attempting to couple some cars together when he realized that the couplers weren't aligned closely enough to actually couple up, so he gave the engineer a stop command. The trainer, a fully certified conductor himself, told the trainee "nah you don't need to do that" and attempted to kick one of the couplers into position with his foot before the train stopped. The trainer then got his own foot caught when the now-lined couplers closed around his foot, leaving the rookie to then decide whether or not to uncouple the cars. How the gently caress do some of these people survive every day life, much less life on the railroad?

Add to this the Wales & Border franchise, which was taken over by the devolved Welsh government in February and LNER being operated directly by the Department for Transport...and that all franchises have been suspended until at least March 2023 with all spending (including wages) now being from the government and all operational changes requiring direct DfT approval. So we're pretty much back in the days of nationalisation with semi-autonomous regions...just with more regions and lots of weird overlaps. Well, more weird overlaps and inconsistencies than when it was tried 1948-1982!

Is it just a small town thing to have everyone, the railroad included, accept the fact that the rail yard is a viable walking path to get from one part of town to another? I don't mean cutting straight across, I'm talking about walking clear from one end to the other. I just hired on with a shortline that operates in a major city, and we chase off the trespassers when we see them. The folks I've been working with haven't been assholes about it, but they usually just go up and tell the trespassers "hey, you might want to head on out before a manager sees you and calls the cops", but I'm visiting this tiny little railroad in the deep, deep south for training and the attitude is way different. We were doing a day of field training for basic stuff and while a whole group of us were out and about in the yard, I saw no less than six people walking through the yard in about as many hours, two of whom traveled both ways and the local crews just ignored them almost entirely.

I've been in places like Concord, KY where the railroad ROW is literally the only way to get to your house. In other places, like Vulan, WV, trespassing along the railroad was literally the only way in/out of town for a while. (until they blackmailed the US Government to step in and rebuild their bridge across the river, by way of petitioning the USSR for aid. There's a recent WTYP Podcast documenting it, that's how I know) You've got people eking out an existence wherever they can, and often in the land of mountains and rivers, the only suitable string of level terrain is taken up by the railroad. The people there just don't have the funds to build the roads necessary to get around, and the railroad is the easiest way to solve the problem of getting from A to B. Most don't mean any harm, but unfortunately with vandalism, theft, and liability in case someone gets hurt, someone with an official capacity officially has to tell them to scram.

It does, however, have a huge variety of trains to play with, and more when mods are included. Workers and Resources is not, strictly speaking, a train game, instead being a Soviet-era socialist city/industry builder. However, trains are going to be one of the primary means of moving both workers and, uhhh, resources to and factories. W&R is that kind of game. Or you can skip all of that and build electric lines. (But then you have to supply the coal or nuclear plants with fuel and workers, and...)
