Pretty much this, yeah. I don't think anything illegal has happened, although I do think that it's sketchy as all gently caress to make filling out that form the same as signing a contract.

Honestly, I've never been so confused or bemused about something in my life. I don't even know whether they've taken any money from me, or whether they will, or whether they can.

I'll get on the media tomorrow

It sounds similar to the PPI firms a few years ago. To claim it was really a very simple process but scum realised they could convince people it was complicated and that if you agree to our T&C's we'll do the 5 minute form for you and keep 30% of your refund.

Your wife has basically just paid this bloke x% of your married couple allowance to say to HMRC "hey these people are married and I'm their agent and they want you to pay the allowance to me." So basically he's taken your money from HMRC.

I constantly get calls from 'insurance' companies asking about my road traffic accident and implying that I may be entitled to compensation if I provide some personal financial details. Sometimes I play along for laughs just to waste their time, sometimes I front it out and call them out saying I do not drive and do not own a car (the truth) just to see how they react. I have no idea how it is legal. I also recently had a call from the 'police' saying a criminal investigation had been opened against me and that only by pressing one could I avoid being arrested! Was tempted to do it and see what happened but seemed very likely to end up in little more than redirect to a rip off premium line where they'd try to keep me on as long as possible. Again, how the hell this isn't fraud idk, or maybe it is, but no one seems to care.

I've made a huge mistake.
Then start a campaign group, and talk to your MP. IMO their fees are ethically disproportionate. If I understand the numbers correctly: the maximum refund is £250 per year at which point they take half. If your refund is anything less £172, they just take the lot.

Also part of my job is support, so I do occasionally get calls to my mobile from unknown landlines. The vast majority are spam trying to change my energy or internet providers, but I still answer the same, and ask what problems they're having with their lighting equipment. And then act confused - why would you call the lighting support line if you don't have a problem?

The last couple of weeks there has definitely been an increase in the random phone calls from HMRC / Royal Mail / DPD etc claiming that you have a parcel to be delivered with a fee to be paid, a warrant out for your arrest or whatever. I've had more in the last 2 weeks than in the last 2 years. I asked on FB and others experiencing the same.

I hang up on the breathless 'car accident' lady. I did get one a few weeks ago from a car accident lady who sounded more like a real person so I wasn't quite so abrupt before hanging up in case it was a hapless UKMTer just trying to make the rent.

Talking of which, is there an official UKMT flag and leader so I can put up a flag and framed portrait of a Dear Leader behind me on my zoom calls?

Yep, you've got no helpful consumer rights that I'm aware of at this point. Possibly something to do with unfair trading practices, but those often don't create a cause of action on behalf of the consumer, although you can still use them as leverage. CAB's probably your best bet on that point.

The "Deed of Assignment" aspect of it looks like it could be an "out" for you, possibly, maybe: a "Deed of Assignment" is a very specific thing that doesn't sound like it should be necessary here, but since they've used those words it probably is for reasons that I don't know because lol I never studied tax law it's boring wank for rich wankers. There's strict formality requirements for a deed though (in particular, it has to make it clear on the face of the document that it is a deed, which it doesn't sound like it did). I don't want to get your hopes up though, because there's a bunch of legal poo poo that can happen if formality requirements fail (particularly if it's in relation to another contract, & you definitely entered into a contract here). I'm being vague here because I'd really have to see all the documents & do a bunch of research to be any help, but if you want me to do that then I'm happy to do so for a comrade (I teach contract law & property law (which also overlaps here for a bunch of reasons) & used to work in contract litigation).

There's also potentially an unfair contract terms angle somewhere in there, but, again, would need to see the contract. I'm good friends with a professor who specialises in unfair contract terms so if anything jumps out at me I can get a good second opinion on that if you want.

Worth asking CAB from an unfair trading practices point of view, but honestly I wouldn't trust them with the legal side of things because it's complicated and they're not lawyers. It's probably not viable to instruct solicitors for these kinds of sums though.

When I get a call from an unknown number these days, I answer it silently. If it's some sort of robo-scam, it doesn't get the verbal response it's expecting and automatically ends the call. If it's a real person, after a couple of seconds you'll hear a slightly confused: "Erm... hello?", which means it's probably safe to go ahead and talk to them.

I got scam call once purporting to be from HMRC saying I owed taxes or whatever, which had me going for a while just because they never actually got around to asking for money or even implying that I could make the problem go away by paying them. (I eventually wised up and hung up, presumably they would have got around to it eventually.)

My partner once came up to me very concerned because she'd gotten a nasty email from somebody claiming to have video of her masturbating to porn that they were going to spread around to friends and family, until I pointed out that 1) it's a common scam and 2) the porn computer doesn't have a webcam

After a brief period of almost equalling the Tory vote in the polls Labour have now returned to the low 30s as they have been for a long time now and Starmers personal ratings are diving hard. There's expected to be a disasterous local election for Labour while they are already at a low and a snap parliamentary election has had a candidate parachuted in who is ill fitting for the constituency at best so things are going to get worse for the party and Starmer.

Gigantic compiled lists of user names, mails, passwords slosh around the Internet. You can buy them for a tenner. Whenever another service gets its account database siphoned off the lists grow. If that service decided to store passwords in plain text, the price goes up a few cents.

People buy those lists and just stuff them into random online services.
