If the war in Iraq had turned out to be a "success," do you think these same people would still be trying to distance themselves from their own support of the campaign? During the lead up to the invasion, my literal child brain was able to correctly determine we were been conned into a war, that the war would be a costly failure leading to more destabilization, that, perversely, Saddam Hussein was an ally if we really cared about killing terrorists, and that Saddam did not have chemical, nuclear, or biological weapons. When Colin Powel gave his famous UN speech, I watched in horror as liberals gleefully expressed delight at the testimony of a man who's entire career was that of lying and coverups. The Bush administration cynically deployed Colin Powel and his conservative black man persona made him irresistible to liberals. The adults around me dismissed my concerns as a lack of understanding how the world worked. Often times, they would then speak openly about their ideas for the war, which usually involved nuclear weapons and surrounding Iraq with a ring of soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder.

There were some other pathetic, miniscule finds as well. Technically, chemical weapons were found. Practically, the chemical weapons discovered were clearly and obviously some decayed, forgotten scrap from the once extensive program that the US helped build.
