It’s not the same thing, but you can make a pretty good case that a person who is a “fan” of someone else (root: fanatic) is predisposed to allow their own boundaries to be crossed because of how they regard that person, and the famous person might have the resources to isolate and control someone for a short period of time. You can see that dynamic in the story about (I think) Angry Joe, who saw someone he wanted to gently caress and immediately isolated her and started pushing her around by lying and then using his entourage to keep her separated from her friends etc. I agree that the idea of coercion works differently or is maybe absent, but they’re still using their status with another person to exploit that person. And that’s not getting into the Cosby territory of “they’ll never believe you” or using access to drugs to dope people up etc.

Honestly, it doesn’t seem like much good can come out of engaging with fans privately for extended periods no matter what, just because there’s a bad foundation to any kind of relationship if it’s born of one-sided admiration. I just don’t see how a genuine friendship or business relationship can come out of that. But I’m guessing that sustained contact mostly happens because someone with a youtube sees a DM and thinks, “They’re infatuated with me. I wonder if they’d let me gently caress them.”

There have been tons of creators who say poo poo like 'I loving hate when I find out tinder dates are fans of my stuff because it feels so awkward' so while 'power imbalance' is clumsy wording the idea that not everyone feels comfortable loving their fans isn't some crazy idea.
