Here's my twitter story, years ago I saw my friend made a second account but with "after dark" at the end. I didn't know what after dark accounts were so I followed them to keep up with them on their new account and then they posted their nudes. That's how I learned what twitter after dark accounts. Their twitter was the first one with "after dark" I had seen so it never occurred to me that this was a nsfw nude-sharing thing. That's my twitter story, thanks for reading.

I've honestly grown less and less interested in RPGs without some sort of skill-based component as the years have gone on, in large part because it seems extremely hard for developers to create purely knowledge-based gameplay systems that aren't either unbelievably broken with only a little effort or are dependent on level grinding for their difficulty curve.

Yeah I feel like SMT games have just broken my enjoyment of other series that are way less complicated because I love being able to engage with the game's systems and DQ11's systems are a skill tree that I took one look at and felt like I had "solved" and that's basically it

Yes and No. There a step above the average FF or DQ, but they aren't as mechanically complex as mainline or the other spinoffs in megaten, and they lag behind a lot of the rest of the Genre.

It's probably worth noting that DQ was created to be a series that anyone even an Elderly person or Salaryman who'd never touched a controller before could beat, they accomplished this by making the levels really matter in a way that they don't in most RPG's, DQ11 has done pretty well in keeping with that tradition.

Another funny story, this one actually related to video games.

When I was 16, I received a gift card to FYE. I went to the FYE and went to look for their video games. I had an idea of where the games would be located so I entered the FYE and went straight to the video games section. I ended up in the hentai section. I didn't know FYE even had a hentai section. From the perspective of any of the employees there, a high school kid just walked into the FYE and directly to the hentai like a man on a mission. I don't go to FYE ever because I never have a reason to and there aren't any nearby but ever since that trip, any time I go in I need to take a 2nd guess at where the games are because every single time my first guess ends up being the hentai section. Every loving time. I want to check out what FYE's game selection is like and no matter if it is a new store, an old store, one I've been in before, one I haven't, wherever I think the games section will be ends up being their hentai aisle.

I used that gift card to buy Front Mission 4, had some fun with it, never finished it though.

e: also apparently FYE still exists, that's a surprise, I thought they'd gone under with a bunch of other similar stores but I guess they're still truckin

I mean, yes in terms of the SMT series as a whole but there's way more to do than most JRPGs. In DQ11 if I got stuck on a fight in hard mode the solution was "grind for 20 minutes", but like I said, without hard mode you just walk all over the game. In Persona/SMT if you lose a fight there's a ton of tweaking you can do before you need to resort to leveling.

That being said P5 is my go-to because it's not on a handheld (like SMT4/A) and I've already beaten every SMT game at least twice (Nocturne twice, Devil Survivor like four times, P3 three times, P4 twice, SMT4 twice) so P5 is just the one that feels the nicest to replay in 2021. I'll probably play Nocturne again when it comes to Steam though, maybe

FYE’s “hentai section” at my local mall was just mixed in with the rest of the anime, you could tell they had porn mixed in from the huge warnings on some of them. I’m kind of amazed that never turned into a big stink anywhere.

2 and a half years ago I bought Crosscode after hearing some buzz about it on release. I played through the first area, found the story a bit interesting, but got bored by the long stretch of overworld exploration. I vaguely kept intending to give it another try and see if it improved but I never got back to it.

So a couple weeks ago I finally decided to try it again, spurred on by the recent release of the DLC. I powered through the first two areas to get to the first real dungeon and finally it hooked me. And now, tonight, I've just beaten the DLC and Crosscode has become my favorite game I've played so far this year and one of my favorite games ever. Holy poo poo I was such a fool to give up on it so quickly in 2018. The story is compelling, the combat is really challenging and exciting, and the puzzles in the dungeons are excellent and mind bending. The overworld exploration is my least favorite aspect of it, but even that I eventually came around on as the jumping puzzles became more elaborate and interesting. Really now my only criticism of the game is the exact thing that initially turned me off - I think putting two whole overworld areas with 0 story back to back before the first dungeon was a big misstep. The game desperately needed something else to mix things up in those early hours. But once I finally got past that I loved every second of it, even when certain puzzles and boss fights had me shouting at my computer.

If there's anyone else who like me gave up on this game fairly early, all I can say is to give it another chance. It really is worth it!

anime thoughts based on opening episodes

id: invaded - it's a strange and gamey concept... people's intent to kill causes some sort of particles to emit, and a government agency collects these particles and creates an 'id well' which as far as i can tell is a computer simulation based on a human's subconscious via those particles. apparently the only type of person who can enter the well is someone who has themselves killed a person, and so the main character is some sort of convicted killer who is very smart?? every time he enters an id well his mind is wiped and he has to relearn who/where he is and what he has to do. it seems like every id well is different in its design/aesthetic and mechanics depending on the person's subconscious. So one person's subconscious is a bunch of disconnected rooms and buildings that have to be connected together, and another is a world of giant drills. so like i said, very video game. very Psychonauts. it's a neat concept, but the characters are not even remotely defined, as almost all of them are just talking about and acting on the plot. the only characters given any definition are a rookie cop who seems to have a slight sadistic streak, and her veteran partner who is gruff and talks a lot about the rules being important and then breaks them. it's like... interesting to think about, and it is well animated, but when your characterization is no better than ex-arm's, that's a problem

wonder egg priority - a high concept anime that actually has characterization and manages to pack a lot into just one episode. after getting a mysterious egg from a capsule machine, an introverted girl gets sucked into a dream world at night where she must save the people in those dreams (to an extent?), with the vague and most likely false promise that her dead friend could be brought back to life. you get a lot in the first episode, you get to know a lot about the protagonist and what they're about while still leaving stuff to mystery, and you get a decent glimpse into the personality of the people the MC encounters in the dream. this one is very cool and i get very tiny pangs of serial experiments lain but in a different genre

otherside picnic - yuri cryptid adventures. unlike the two above, this one is a bit more conventional... there's a parallel world with cryptid/creepypastas and two women want to explore it, and will probably kiss at some point, unless the anime pulls some bullshit. i appreciate the fact that after their urban legend encounter at the end of the first episode, and a brief moment of calm, they immediately take off screaming running at roadrunner speed. there's also a segment in an elevator where various monsters keep attacking the elevator at each stop and the co-lead talks about how "yeah that's pretty normal, just shut the door if you it charging at the door". so you have one character that is afraid but intrigued by the Otherside, and another character that seems simultaneously prepared for yet oblivious to the real danger the otherside proposes. i think it's neat

sleepy princess - i was a bit let down by this one knowing it was by the nozaki-kun director/writer. it is light hearted and fun but it's not the joke-a-minute comedic free for all that nozaki-kun was. it has a pace as sleepy as the princess herself and the sort of "she does something kinda violent" gag is already repetitive and not really working. i appreciated the clock tower homage but i may pass on this one

talentless nana - whether this one will maintain my interest depends on whether the show manages to keep me rooting for the main character. at this point i think the whole "go in blind" thing is dumb because there's a billion shows out there so knowing the actual plot would make it a better sell. so basically, the plot involves a sociopath without superpowers being tasked with killing a bunch of superpowered teens in training one by one without being caught, in order to protect humanity. there's a bit of pipework for WHY humanity is doing this, although it is not necessarily a given that this is the 'right' decision, just the decision humanity may have made out of self-preservation, or maybe the anime will reveal that there's even more under the surface. i am curious about nana's past since something's going on there, but i also just can enjoy a Columbo-like cat and mouse series.

planet with - another anime where every episode is dense with no time wasted. this is an action show that feels a teensy bit gainax-y, about a boy living with a maid and an anthromorphic cat that has to defeat a group of mech-piloting defenders of the earth and taking their powers away. to say that this is a show about 'the bad guys' is not accurate though... i would say that their alignment is fairly neutral despite the MC's desire for revenge (it's complicated??). there's interesting stuff at play, the different factions in conflict, the identities of the heroes and their connection to the protagonist outside of this cosmic struggle, and the just flat out weird as hell designs of the Nebula's attack forces which I'm sure have a purpose to their design but to this pointt that I've watched have just been baffling (one attack fleet is just a group of upsidedown giant babies).

i find myself unable to binge a single show all at once so i am constantly hopping around

as to what will appeal to games chat, i think talentless nana might because it is very Danganronpa in tone once the 'shift' happens (end of episode 1) but these all seem like relatively decent-to-good anime and whether i think they become great will really depend on how things go after the first major story arcs of each show. but i will probably keep hopping around like a-ko on buildings at the beginning of project a-ko as she is getting to school

For reference I've gotten to the Slayer of the Sands in DQ11 and could NOT beat him with the setup I had, so I looked up the speedrun to see what level they beat it at and there was a like, one-hour segment of grinding before that exact fight and yeah sure enough I just wasn't high enough level and they were going for the exact same skill tree build I was planning on because between the choice of a lot of single-target damage and multi-target damage of course you want single-target damage in the fight with only one enemy.

Yeah watching the Endurance run a few times had really soured me on 4 also. I did my second playthrough only once Golden came out on Steam last year and I was just turbo-ing through the field trip and the camping trip and the school festival. P5 though when I did my third playthrough for Royal I still was able to enjoy every cutscene and wasn't doing any skipping, so in that sense it's held up a lot better.

As Cheetah said, it's part of some multimedia franchise push so it's as far from arthouse as possible, but it's a very solid single-season story with great characters, music and animation.
