Trin Tragula posted:"OK officer, he wasn't arrested at the scene, how are you establishing identity?" It's essential that the press attend protests and that inevitably means pictures of participants so the best you can do is not carry your phone, mask up and not talk about it openly while also saving and sharing those pictures as cool things that happened to somebody. Also mix up your wardrobe between demos, don't let a pattern develop just because you've got a cool hoodie.

Mixing up wardrobe especially includes shoes. Shoes are one of the most identifiable things on a person and I feel this is often overlooked. If you did do anything naughty at any point, also be sure to not wear those clothes again if they’re even vaguely identifiable (as in not literally a black hoodie from primark). I know a guy who got caught for criminal damage committed six months prior to his arrest cos he was wearing the same kefir at a different protest. Went down for three months for the sake of not changing his kefir up.

Like the not wearing a face covering thing that I mentioned earlier, bringing their phones along with them (tracking devices lol), making posts on social media about it and yes, failing to understand that the police can have long memories where these event are involved and that they can absolutely nab you long after the fact if you're fool enough to go round in the same outfit you were wearing while you merrily booted the wing mirrors off a police car the previous year. There's only so much safety in numbers: if the police are annoyed and embarassed enough, they can devote a lot of manpower to tracking down individuals in crowds who think thatbthey can break stuff, then quietly sneak anonymously off again.

I'm guessing they accidentally did use the slur, which always throws me for a loop because the one-f spelling, kafir, just means "non-believer" in Arabic so the addition of another f making it basically the n-word was a bit of a "wait, what" moment.

Apparently Churchill was fond of the term too. The limes come from south east asia and the leaves are now really really common in recipes as they are a staple of Thai and Indonesian food. There has been a bit of debate about changing the name in English to something else - as far as anyone can work out it's unrelated to the African usage of the word and was just a mangling of Infidel Limes adopted from Arabic traders by the Portuguese South Africa usually just calls them Thai Limes

And then on the other side you have Jessflaps tone policing how unacceptable burning police vans is while ignoring the reasons people are angry, and Kieth refusing to even talk about any of this at PMQs because he wholeheartedly supported the spycops legislation and presumably he hasn't had time to run any of this past a focus group. Nobody except lefty shitposters are talking about any of this and the anger, exacerbated by lockdown is bubbling over. Listening to livestreams from last night, the agitators were out for loving blood, jeering the kind of things that drive a mob to murder if they catch the wrong person. I guess that's the other thing is that if the agitators were just plants trying to make the protestors look like a mob, they're playing with fire right now with the state this country is in.

Tesseraction posted:Then go into a diatribe about how the US has control of our nukes and BRITANE STRANG so we need to have homegrown nukes. Isolationism and aspirations of national autarky are both dumb as hell, but it's about the one case where you really need to have it not reliant on any other nuclear armed power, regardless of what your normal state of relations is with them, because any global situation where you're even considering using nuclear weapons is not a normal state of relations. The press seem to consistently ignore this though. Like it's massively important that we spend billions on a nuclear deterrent, and you can't have a lefty jam socialist would wouldn't use it, because otherwise ~the deterrent~ stops working, but you can't even speculate about what our relationship with the USA would look like once nukes have started flying.

If you don't want to say you would never use nukes (which is the right answer, I suppose their main purpose is international prestige) it's so easy to waffle something like "if the integrity of the British Isles was threatened by a foreign army I would nuke their base" instead of flat out abdicating from the responsibility of the job you are apparently vying for. It's madness that we are considering building more nuclear warheads at the exact moment we are hopefully emerging from an economy shattering pandemic but it's even crazier that Kieth comes off looking like a dolt when opposing it should be an open goal.
