Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he's had enough of "Quebec bashing" following controversial remarks from a University of Ottawa professor.

At a press conference Monday, he and Quebec Premier Franois Legault said they were disappointed the institution's president opted not to condemn online comments from law professor Amir Attaran, who claims the province is led by "a white supremacist government" and too tolerant of racism.

Nobody I know has any use whatsoever for the pquistes or their persistence in trying to ban everything non-Catholic people do, but the CBC said more or less the same thing on multiple occasions so why is this guy tweeting such a bi

Oh. Right.

quote:

The two leaders weighed in after the University of Ottawa opted not to apologize to the Parti Qubcois for Attaran's posts. Jacques Frmont, the university's president, said in a letter to PQ leader Paul Saint-Pierre Plamondon on Sunday that the institution does not share Attarans opinions, but that they were were posted on his personal social media account and thus not subject to sanction, as course lectures might be.

The PQ leader had asked for an apology following recent remarks from Attaran, who on Twitter has called Quebecs culture racist, dubbed it the Alabama of the north and accused Quebec nurses of "medical lynching" in regard to Joyce Echaquan, a 37-year-old Indigenous woman who died in a Quebec hospital in 2020.

I'd hope an educated man would know better than to use the government as synecdoche for the people, but someone keeps electing these governments, and when they get in power they have an unerring habit of trying to do racism. Racist culture isn't something peculiar to Quebec, their execution is just distinct.

According to the [CAQ], Quebec is defined by "its historical heritage, the French language, its democratic ideals and the principles of the secularity of the State, and equality among men and women". The Party supported the Quebec ban on face covering but also argue the ban is not extensive enough. They propose to prohibit the wearing of religious symbols by personnel in a position of authority, including teachers. The party supports to interculturalism to "integrate newcomers". This includes limiting immigration and promoting the use of French without creating new barriers. However, they want to except Quebec from the requirements of multiculturalism. In 2018, it proposed cutting the number of immigrants by 20 per cent, to 40,000 annually

It sure seems to CAQ like a duck.

Listening to CBC radio this morning saying that Ontario is moving the minimum age down sooner than expected... because they got less than stellar uptake among the 80+ crowd. Which is dismaying, but not surprising. I doubt it's much to do with vax hesitancy at all, I suspect it's way more that registration has to be done through an online portal and you can't get it through your GP. And i've never even heard the URL mentioned once as a fairly regular CBC1 listener. If you're a non-tech-savvy senior, you could have no idea how to register if you even know you're eligeable.

If you decide that Climate Change isn't real, you're going to be really overwhelmed when millions of people show up on the doorstep expecting to be let in to the country because the place they came from is on fire or underwater. We don't have an army that can deal with that, so if you're the anti immigration party, you should really be planning for the knock on effects.

That said, why would they plan for anything? It's much easier to let a home schooled zygote try to drum up anti abortion rhetoric.

its funny because when I was young and just beginning to learn about our political systems I thought that the Conservatives meant they looked after wetlands and stuff because I lived near a couple of conservation areas and the words were the same.

CBC Article posted:

A regional health authority north of Montreal is investigating allegations that the human resources department at one of its hospitals made being white a job requirement when recruiting new staff.

Rosemonde Landry, head of the CISSS des Laurentides, said she was shocked to read the allegations that were first revealed in La Presse.

The digital newspaper reported it obtained emails sent by Saint-Eustache hospital recruiters that said a "difficult patient" was insisting on being helped by a white woman only. The request for white women was made 10 times last fall, La Presse said.

"We have zero tolerance for racism," Landry told CBC News, adding there are other ways of managing patients who insist on being served by whites only. "We launched an investigation immediately."

However, the president of a local temp agency that works primarily with government health services says this happens all the time.

"I've lost some files because I wasn't able to agree that I would only send white people," said Jill Eusanio of Comfort Keepers, which provides hundreds of nurses and home-care workers to the province.

Quebec is that wildcard that seems to decide most federal elections and they swing wildly. It's a real pain in the rear end for any sitting PM who has to try to dance around their backward-rear end xenophobic provincial policies that just sit right in the open like a massive turd nobody in the house wants to acknowledge because they all know who did it but that guy has the PS5 and will just move out if provoked.

thankfully Quebec Solidaire is on the rise as a proper leftist party and seems to be slowly getting into things other than identity politics, hopefully they also ditch the independence part at some point, but its so low key Ive known a lot of Anglo federalist also vote their way. a CAQ/QS duality would be quite funny news wise I feel like.

Outdoor physical fitness should be allowed. Indoor should not. One year in and we're still pretending COVID isn't airborne.

We're going to be hearing a lot about how outbreaks haven't been traced to gyms, which is totally disingenuous because gyms have been closed for almost the entirety of the last 6 months and had very limited access last summer.
