I think if you do this it should work, but I'm a bit more sketchy on the spawning system for turrets:

That will work, unless any of the missions or lancedefs are calling for that particular turret by the ID name.

The Hero We Need
Not much to update - did a couple Clan stomps at Keid for max cash, threw about $860k into stuffing a Clan XL into the Hunchback, along with a second double Gauss ammo bin and jumpjets, as well as swapping one Magna ML for a pulse, and the other one for a CLan ER SL. Also crammed in a Guardian ECM system.

Head off to Alula Aust... oh wait, I can reach Zavijava and try for SLDF surplus! Nothing really thrilling, but there's Quicsell merch. (Since I turned on that option for the hell of it - adds mostly-overpowered gimmicky hardware, with extra downsides as well. And I'll probably disable that as it's not as amusing as I was hoping for.)

Oh well, time to blow poo poo up! One skull, recovery with secondary, versus the Vegas contegent. (Fear and Lothian.)

Hmm, that's a lot of enemy pips - two full stars.

Stars?

Yeah, ain't no Lothians here, just Clan, and many *many* missile-spread mines. Versus my B team.

Nope.

Second try, I get the correct enemies, and take some awfully hard and weird hits (Quicsell). Still, complete and get some low cash out of it. (Original max cash was like under $200k, I just wanted to give the B team some experience.)

OK, let's try bodyguarding a Steiner wheel and their ancestral Griffin versus Clanbois. Spawn, start running up the local terrain feature to fire down on the...

STORM CROW! YAY! And it's an overheater, so shuts down about two turns in.

Which is when the Hanse forces land. :v:

Why yes, I will happily camp this commanding height and snipe at both sides. They're busy chewing each other up - literally, in the case of the Crosscut mech equipped with two Heavy Chainsaws - while I plonk away. Some drat heavy weapons going off - X-lasers, i guess, some kind of cluster PPC, luckily they were focused on each other. (And that drat Steiner VIP was total poo poo, by the way - solid Griff, wasted on someone with 1 Gunnery, 1s and 2s except for one 3 in Guts.)

Finished up with the last Toad, and went to loot. Oh. Lots and lots of Quicsell weirdness, like that cluster PPC, and the X-lasers, and both the chainsaw bandit and an overheating Hanse Valkyrie were outright QS mechs.

And the Storm Crow? I'd womped on it hard, knocked it down while shut down, while the pilot cooked. And then the Hanse assholes blew the poo poo out of it, and there was only one piece for salvage. :cry:

Final of the night (spent a lot of the evening watching hockey instead) was a Blackout versus Clan, which left me with no mech damage at all because the two mechs and three elementals were busy shooting at the biggest building. Which survived. Unlike the Toad that took a Gauss headshot at point-blank range. :unsmigghh:

I did take that QS cluster PPC from earlier, might try it out - if it's worthwhile, I might keep QS on. Otherwise, stomp around, see what missions I like, and drive onwards to Stellaris and glory cash money! Because goddammit I want some (lots) funds available for when I find a King Crab, Warhammer or Marauder in the store again.

Also for more miniguns, because those take Specialist slots, I have some Clans MGs and at least one + MG for 50% extra crit, and some spare MASCs for fast runnin'. Get me an Ace Pilot and something small and speedy that can take all this, and I can put out a backstabber.

Unless that QS PPC thing is good, which would be a *hilarious* backstabber.

Edit: found the stats for the PPC.

Lotta Rt loving around the past few days. Starting off with a simple "escort the useless VIP in a Griffin vs. Clan Burrock", and a really badly-chosen deploy location to get mauled in - and then the Burrock second wave arrives.

Clan Savescum to the rescue! Well, maybe not. Better deploy, but now it's verus two stars (with two Griffins, various other mechs and a STORM CROW! but not the nice ECM one) oh and the second wave dropped solid tanks who sniped the gently caress out of everyone.

Third try was rather silly, as two Thorns got legged, fell down... and the engine was destroyed. :catstare: Followed by a PPC mech alpha'ing every turn - and overheating/shutting down after two turns. And fell over. Engine destroyed. :psypop:

Note to Clan Burrock pilots: do not store your impact-fused grenade collection in the center torso.

OK, let's go assassinate some dude in the city, as opposed to just "Occupant"-addressed murder. Wipe wipe wipe... wait, where's the target? Carefully scout forward, towards where the initial marker showed on deploy, enemy turns happen but no pip... oh there it is. No data. Close way in, no data. ???

Hope everyone up to get visual... <insert throatclicking here> fully stealthed with ECM/IFF jamming etc Commando. Which doesn't really do enough versus two active ECM suites and all the weaponry at point-blank range. Got the electronics out for choice, two parts of the special-variant mech were allocated. A little later I got another stealth package, but while it's be ridiculous to make my Hunchie invisible, I just don't have the slots. :smith:

"Comstar made a base in our city, go kill it." Why not?

Big loving artillery is why not. Plus a mine turret. Which carpeted the poo poo out of the area that the allied forces (two mechs, two tracks) were stooging around in, where they'd spawned *right there* in close range LoS to two turrets and most of the defense lance. Best part of that was watching the Comstar mech running into the minefields, doing the usual AI dance to dodge from cover to cover, and leg itself on the mines. :suicide:

And right around there is where the game hung. :cry: Mine turret was down, next firing cycle would have deleted the command bunker and one Shredder turret, and I was really hoping to salvage whatever the arty was - bigass BARRAGE INCOMING marker that my mechs cleared fine, but the AI allied ones just wandered around in (in the Mine Zone at that).

Retry... gently caress. No arty. No mines, I guess that's OK. Gauss turret GIMME SALVAGE! Oh look, Stinger LAM. And a Wasp LAM. Stinger stayed on the ground the whole time for ??? reasons. Wasp snuck in, high-speed, landed right behind my lance O SHI

"Failed Shutdown override." DANGER TO MANIFOLD! Swivel two back and blapped him, then went back to turret sniping. Stinger tried the same thing on foot, not even jump jets, and it was my dual Stealth kids that removed him.

And no Gauss loot. :smithicide: Did get the surviving part of both LAMs, though, from allocation.

Ooooh, Demolisher-G in the store! Two Gauss, two Large Lasers, only... $5.89 mil. Uhm, I have $4.01 mil, can we make a deal?

No.

Solo duel, appeared to be someone my merc company had had dealings with before. ":Killbox" thought her Clan gear would kick my rear end. She hadn't heard about my upgrades. Gaussed her, and then got a second initiative before she did. WOMP.

Still not enough cash. Go wipe another base, equipped with a Thumper (which didn't survive) and a mortar carrier, so everyone was sandpapered really well. Thumper ammo, mortars, other poo poo.

Sell more vehicle bits - YES! $6.1 million! Gimme the D! :quigley:

City fight, to wipe another base, full star and support star of Clan. Almost every one of which was packing LRMs. :gonk: had to throw one of the B-crew in the tank, because my good pilots couldn't drive it, hosed if I know why. So, she's been around for most of this pla6ythrough, trading off on one of the Stealths, but I guess no tank affinity because her accuracy blows at range. Get closer and WHAM WHAM WHAM, though.

Cleared that out with *lots* of armor loss (except Big D, who they couldn't hit for poo poo), OK look but I went mostly for cast, got me over $900k again. Welp, time to refit that tank - remove Gauss, slap in LBX or UAC (or both), see what else can fit...

"Vehicles cannot be refitted."

gently caress

Yeah, even storing it (which strips equipment) didn't drop anything in my inventory. :smith: Did find out, when going through the parts box bay, that I had more ready-able mechs - it's the big white box that says "READY" when you have enough compatible-variant parts to rebuild. :v: Two-AC Cent is one, and has been re-stored after repair until I have the ready cash for pimpin'. Mist Lynx, that fancy stealth Commando, a nine-laser Cicada that just might get a MASC and one of the stealth packages to become my speedy Ace Pilot backstabber...

Mercenary needs cash badly. Hmm, 2-skull fight versus Clan Wolf. 1.5 skulls on this planet are tending to maul me, and I expect Wolf pilots won't faw down go boom.

Might be time to head out from Zavijava.

Oh, almost forgot. Refit a bunch of electronics in everyone, and now the Gauss Hunchback has a long-range FCS - bonus accuracy at long and extreme range, worse at close. <shrug> Parked Hunchie vs. a turret at about visual max, I could get 90+% shots. :snypa:

Update: woooof. Game put the "Rogue" into "Roguetech" tonight.

Last job I want at Zavijava, go for Target Acquisition - figure I can bail if it sucks too hard. Manage to deploy right near one of the three target zones, enemies have turrets connected to a generator, a Hussar, Cicada and a couple Shamash APCs. Pop the generator, womp on enemies while moving into the target zones, finish off everything (with the help of some allied mechs) - but a couple hovercraft had already spawned. While I'm killing those, Finger of God happens to the base, yay! But not before two more blowers appear. And they move down between me and the extraction zone.

And then I get a message - "Enemy kill team inbound". I figure, "hey, I kick rear end, I can take 'em".

Full star lands, literally next to the extract. All in perfect condition. Couple tanks. STORM CROW (overheater, not the ECM version).

And a Warhammer.

And a loving Highlander.

:suicide:

If I'd just run right for the extract as soon as the markers were placed, letting enemies backshoot me as I sprinted, my Hunchie would still not have made it in time. Maybe the Centurion would. Stealths would be fine.

Oh, and only eight turns from deploy to get the markers placed, so *two* clocks running.

tl;dr - gently caress Zavijava, gonna go find pirates to murder.

New world, new missions. Hey, duo duel... for Marik, but decent payout, which is what I needed.

First try: Hunchie/Cent vs. Blackjack/Wolverine, result is AC shot somehow making it through the left arm, left torso, center torso to delete my damaged right torso (which I'd swiveled away for protection) and deleted my Gauss and ammo.

gently caress you, game.

Second try: Hunchie/Cent vs. Trebuchet/Apollo, and hosed I wanted loot off the Apollo: Laser AMS. Which was firing even if the Treb was targeted. Waaaay too many rockets to survive.

Third try: Hunchie/Demolisher-G vs. Treb/Apollo, not sure WTF they were unloading on me but poo poo-tons of inferno-type missiles, tank got a magic bullet through undamaged armor and was destroyed.

Fourth try: Hunchie/Cent vs. Firestarter/Wolverine, which worked better - still took an awful of of damage from the AC, but Zippo getting legged right off helped. (Also, he never tried to close, so lasers alone.)

gently caress-all for loot, nothing I even wanted but I'd gone for full cash anyway.

Minor city fight vs. Clan, *something* was dropping big arty but I never ID'd it, nothing showed in the salvage either. Did put my A-team Cent pilot into medbay for 18 days, got lasered in the face by a Swayback.

Support the heavy air unit: Yeah, sorry FWL, your chopper is somewhat better than most of the ones I've faced, but it's no Warthog. Clan reinforcements pop up on my left flank, but take enough time getting in range that I can wipe the original star.

Enemy fire: big lasers - PEW PEW. Missile barrages: WHOOSH WHOOSH BOOM. Something I couldn't ID right off: FUNKY ELECTRONIC NOISE. Check 'em out - Ares FCS, some fast-moving vehicle that got blapped because it charged in close, couple of Kit Foxes.

Funny noise agaiOH poo poo chopper takes a gauss hit. (Survives.) Check the enemies again... Kit Fox H. Gauss. KILL!

Beat the poo poo out of it, core it. Finish off the rest.

Two pieces of my choice: Clan Gauss and double Gauss bin, please. :toot:

Time to gently caress around refitting that extra Cent I have - that's a two-ballistic variant, maybe I can fit all the best bits of my Hunchie into it?

Still need cash, though, so I can start reassembling all this stuff in storage and strip any recovered Good Stuff out before selling/scrapping. loving garbage sale prices, though. Complete mechs pull under $25k? (Stinger, IIRC.)(Might even be Clan, have to look.) I've gotten $230k scrapping single helicopter parts, goddamn.

Dicked around some refitting the Centurion and the fancy Locust (Cicada had a different set of hardpoints, all these chickenwalking bugmechs lool alike to me).

Clan Endo, Ferro and XL. Ballistics +2 FCS, Beagle probe and Guardian ECM, max jumpjets and armor, a 250 powerplant, and the Clan Gauss with a double ammo bin. Means I can't fit any more ACs/ammo, because over weight. :(

Oh well, $1.5 mil down the hole, let's take it for a spin! Pirate base destruction, .5 skulls.

Dear *god* that pilot sucks. Can't hit poo poo. Maybe I need to rethink this.

Ooooor... maybe I should just use Darius, off the B-team, rather than the A-team guy that's never been out of a Stealth?

Reload, retry same mission - still shite accuracy at first, but eventually saw sniping like a pro.

And something I just thought of: maybe I should stick in the B-teamer that *actually drives* that original Centurion... :downs:

Reload, start Six Million Dollar Man theme, refit the nine-laser bug. Chameleon stealth armor. Clan Ferro and Xl. Biggest powerplant I can fit and still have armor and guns. XL gyro. Clan DHS. MASC. 5 small lasers - a mix of ER, ER Magna, and Pulse. (Ran out of fancy lasers/sinking/wight.) No jump jets, but it's a runner.

Same mission, Hunchie/Cent/Stealth are plinking away and drawing fire. Bugrunner whips up behind a Commando and called-shot center torso deletes all the armor and crits everything inside. :unsmigghh: *Enemy does not attempt hostile action*, runs. Second round of fire finishes coring. Still no one shooting at bug.

Run up behind Commando #2. Alpha removes leg, knockdown. Run off, and I have enough movement with MASC that I can pointblank a turret from about three hexes out. Turret previously damaged to half-armor, burned down to nothing. Run back, finish off downed Commando. Run back to shoot last turret. Shredder turret finally fires at Ninja Bug, hits nothing with full salvo of assorted missiles. Run up, murder (damaged) turret.

I need to try this versus some better enemies - getting hit by most anything will eat me, but *goddamn* was that hilarious.

May try out another refit tonight - drop the lasers, stuff PPC in - I've got a stock one, Clan ER, Snub and that Quicsell cluster jobbie.

I kinda get where they're coming from - this earlier article kinda drives home the fact that without the designers' focus on the characters over the Mechs - even the pilots we hire - the game becomes little more than 'smash robots together, get big numbers' which has been done countless times already.

It's why we get so attached to Glitch's quirks and why Dekker dying has become such a meme within the community.

The sad thing is like, that could have been a thing in vanilla, too, all the systems were put in place to allow it. I think it's just, as Kiva mentioned in an earlier blog, they just never hired more writers to take advantage of and expand the whole system to really flesh it out and put in all those character flavor moments.

Kiva was really putting a lot of work into the game and i think when she had her wife doing stuff it may have been unpaid extras. Noone who puts that much work into something that didnt have massive aaa funding is ever going to be happy at every shortcut they had to do because of lack of money or people. Its why the BT we got was as good as it was.

It's a shame they're done with the game because I would totally buy another DLC that just added a ton more variety of events, use of pilot and mission tags, and so on, like she says in the writeup about events and pilots.

OK, faffed around some more. Throwing a PPC on the bug is decidedly meh - possibly because no one has *used* a PPC, possibly because I was still doing max-sprint (13 hexes) movements, and possibly because I was still trying to pointblank. <shrug>

Fiddling with the loadout, I managed to get seven light lasers of various sorts crammed in, but that build is 60 heat sinking vs. 56 alpha heat. Got a heat exchanger on one of them other robbits, might swap that in because LOL your LAM built up some evasion? Ain't that special. <mass photon barrage>

Also reassembled the ninja Commando 2DS, with the inbuilt Mistwalker stealth armor and AR12 Sheathed Beacon (ECM/active probe combo cockpit), and, uhhh... it's really not that stealthy. Everyone was taking shots at it, even with 13 hexes of sprint evasion. Plus, the weapons loadout is specialized too much away from "massive damage". Keeping it, though, in case I find a COIL or something - not sure if the RT team removed it.

Also, it's got the "Nimble" trait, which is what grants Ace Pilot in RT.

Might try some other builds, but I'll probably end up just finalizing Laserbug and going back to playing for cash and prizes salvage.

Started Ninjabug, and went chicken-stealing while waiting for it to finish. So, of course, I take a mil-plus mission for all cash, a wild Thumper turret appears, and the goddamn gun survives. And isn't part of my allocation. :smithicide:

Looks like the RT package pumped up the assassination target morale some - when I played vanilla, they'd pull a runner as soon at they took a couple solid hits. The one I just did lost an arm and torso in his Locust, and only moved enough to gain some evasion/get into the woods, even being focus-fired by my whole lance.

Yup, sure looks like they tweaked victims assassination targets - in vanilla, I'd have to close in and call shot to leg them to keep them from doing a runner to their exfil zone. The one I just did hung in and tried to fight back against four mechs all up in his grille.

Laserbug is doing great work, either by close-range burning holes or by sprinting around building evasion and drawing fire. Swapped out my Clan Heavy Small Lasers for Clan ERs because of heat, but full-alpha combined with YEEHA! Speedy Locustez balls-out running means I have to turn off lasers if I shoot consecutive turns. And this is with the Heat Exchanger, too.

The Argo is mostly-upgraded now, and what's left is fukken spendy - buying the used Leopard for extra drop capacity it over two mil, plus the associated upgrades to *that*. Gamma Pod is like $1.6 mil, as well, abd I need both of those for other upgrades.

Finally ran out of good jobs, and headed to Solaris... and the opening mission for the original storyline pops up as a Flashpoint. :D Biggest change other than the Roguetech mechanics: you're now driving a Phoenix Hawk LAM which is amusing as all hell. Payout was kinda meh - $300k, box of weapons/ammo/gear. <shrug>

Beyond that, everything is actually team fights so far - 4v4 or 8v8, which I can't really do yet; I've got enough mechs and vehicles, if I assemble more from the salvage collection, but they're mostly shite compared to the big iron on deck. I actually have enough pilots at decent skill, too.

It's the off-season, though, maybe if I loiter long enough I'll some solo fights - Gaussback is doing butcher's work in one-on-one fights.

I've also gotten to see more weapons I really want - one of the solo duels I was taking acid damage from special missile payloads, and on that last assassination, one of my allied units was throwing some kind of rocket thermobaric warhead, looked impressive as all hell.

It was an interesting read. But the bit at the end about a "Polynesian woman" versus a "Spanish man" really jarred, heh. She spent the whole essay pointing out, entirely reasonably, that it's dumb and a bit lazy to just have the Space Japanese fighting the Space Germans, then describes her her own protagonist as a Space Polynesian fighting a Space Spaniard for control of the Space Holy Roman Empire (which is in itself a very well-worn sci-fi trope). But oh well.

This loving game. I like most of what BTA has done, but every once in a while the numbers roll just right and everything goes to complete poo poo. 3 1/2 skull Battle against Nova Cat. Turns out to be a hot-drop with the first star right in front of me, on the beach of an island with a cliff face directly in front of my force, and another star at the top of the cliff in trees. All medium Clanners against my 3 heavy/2 mediums/1 light, and me in the worst possible firing position and literally no where to go. Then I look at the objectives:

-Kill the target star
-Kill the supporters
-Kill the ambushers
-Kill the reinforcements

So it's a full trinary + vehicles. I run the light up to the cliff face and fire off the active probe, and there's a loving Alacorn sitting up there. Lost the scout and a medium on the first turn. Was over before it started.

This loving game. I like most of what BTA has done, but every once in a while the numbers roll just right and everything goes to complete poo poo. 3 1/2 skull Battle against Nova Cat. if they do stuff like that where they put you in a position where you lose something through no fault of your own I just restart the mission and hope the seed is unfucked

Oh absolutely, I was just amazed at just how bad that particular seed was.

I restarted and got the same map with a slightly different starting position, with a mixed light/medium star at the top of the hill and a Blood Asp at range. Was a much more interesting round, rushing the hill meant letting myself get pincered between the Asp and the support star, but I had to go for it because I was getting picked apart trying to lure them down, and between elevation and evasion I couldn't land solid hits. Lost a Marauder and a Shadow Hawk before I got the support star under enough control to send someone after the Asp. Was pretty torn up by the end but the salvage was nice.

Height disadvantages are just utter murder when they roll really poorly. Pretty much the most important thing in the tactical game in BTA is taking high ground for yourself.

So for those of you playing BEX, I've figured out how to remove the horrible turrets without editing each and every turret definition file.

There are two things you need to do.

First, in the mod.json file in the BT_Extended directory, you delete three lines that contain instructions that add the turrets and turret related files to the database. I forgot to save a version of the file, so I don't have a "before" picture, but this is what it looks like afterward:

code:
{
    "Name": "BT_Extended",
    "Enabled": true,

	"Version": "1.9.1.2",

	"OptionallyDependsOn": [ "BT_Extended_3025_Plus" ],

	"DLL": "Components.dll",

	"Manifest": [

		{ "Type": "AmmunitionBoxDef", "Path": "ammunitionBox", "AddToDB": true },
		{ "Type": "ChassisDef", "Path": "chassis", "AddToDB": true },

		{ "Type": "MechDef", "Path": "mech", "AddToDB": true },
		{ "Type": "ChassisDef", "Path": "meleeFixes-chassisMerge", "ShouldMergeJSON": true, "AddToDB": false },
		{ "Type": "MechDef", "Path": "meleeFixes-mechMerge", "ShouldMergeJSON": true, "AddToDB": false },
		{ "Type": "MovementCapabilitiesDef", "Path": "movement", "AddToDB": true },
        { "Type": "PathingCapabilitiesDef", "Path": "pathing" },
        { "Type": "Sprite", "Path": "portraits" },

		{ "Type": "WeaponDef", "Path": "weapon", "AddToDB": true }
    ]
}
Second, you need to delete the .modtek folder in your Mods directory. This looks like where Modtek caches database information. When you start Battletech again, modtek will rebuild this folder, this time without the turrets.

By definition if rt does it another mod does. You just have to hope the rt people credited the mod they incorporated
