I don't think he didn't know what he was doing. I think his intentions are crystal clear in the ending. I disagree that he was playing fourth dimensional chess with EON and crafting a satirical takedown of Bond under their noses, which went unnoticed by them and most audiences upon release. I think both EON and Mendes were on the same page in creating a celebration of Bond. It deliberately presents the character as old and outdated both in terms of the narrative and as a meta cultural figure. But then pivots to argue why we still need him anyway and ends the film with him ascending into the role we all recognize. I agree, it's not subtle. M even has a whole speech about it to make it clear as day.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
I tend to view the ending of Skyfall as tragic too. I mean, in the personal sense, we sort of see Bond on the brink of quitting - past the brink of quitting really, we see Bond *constantly* failing, his health failing him, failing to rescue the girl, failing his entire mission. But he ends the movie back on the job, while another character quits instead. You can read it many ways and certainly at one angle Bond has to serve the franchise goals of "there has to be more movies". But the interpretation I had was that Bond is trapped in a kafkaesque nightmare that even though the only reason he had to stick with the job is now dead, he remains a 007 because unlike Moneypenny, he has nowhere else to go, nothing else in his life.

Bond the man died, only Bond the agent remains. Makes the job much easier.

Also made it easier to ignore the execrable Spectre.

EDIT: ^^^ The answer to "why we still need Bond" within the movie is "because M still needs Bond, and Bond still needs M". Despite whatever M might say about "needing someone to press or not press the button", it is totally not supported by the movie itself. The conclusion of the movie focuses on the emotional angle, reinforced by the return to Bond's childhood home, reinforced by Bond throwing away every single thing he cares about to save one retiring civil servant. And fails.

^I didn't really get that from Skyfall, but I did funnily enough take exactly that from Casino Royale.

I think Casino Royale did have the same theme as well, with the "who cares, the bitch is dead" line, but then it goes to lengths to have M restore Bond's humanity somewhat by telling him about Vespers saving him, resulting in Bond going after Mr White for revenge. My view of Skyfall is basically as a bleaker version of that, where M isn't around any more, everyone Bond cares about is dead, and he's just stuck as the company man.

Skyfall was a film I didn't love but it sure is one of the most beautifully filmed that I've ever seen, it's as good a candidate for that whole Every Frame A Painting thing as they come. Such incredible cinematography, it still baffles me how Deakins didn't get the award for it.

As for themes, the main theme I took from it was death. Starting with that shot of Bond looking in the mirror at MI6 invoking the Grim Reaper, where he literally looks like a skull with a thin layer of skin stretched over it, he goes on to achieve...nothing. He fails to retrieve the hard drive, he doesn't save the girl, he doesn't foil the antagonist, he isn't able to save M. He just zips from one disaster to the next leaving a trail of bodies and destruction in his wake because that's all he's good for. He's effectively an avatar of Death, he can't be killed but nor can he do anything but kill.

I popped my own popcorn on the stove tonight and it was pretty easy and worked. None of the fancy seasonings and oils and stuff people talking about, just a little vegetable oil, a little butter, and a little salt in a regular old pot with a vented lid and it was pretty decent. So probably gonna ditch the microwave stuff and maybe try some of the suggested stuff and improve on it.

Yeah, once I realized how easy stovetop popcorn was I wondered why I had ever bothered with microwave.

And poo poo, even if you really only want to go to the effort of microwave popcorn, you can just put some kernels in a paper bag, staple it shut (it's fine!) and microwave it that way!

Kinda weird that this film about a notoriously misogynist character would go out of its way to show him as a misogynist piece of poo poo.

Probably a coincidence.

Except the movie explicitly agrees with it and thinks Bond is great. The entire purpose of that movie was to revert any character progress they had made with Bond the previous two movies, because "the old ways are the best ways." It's also very pro austerity in that way. It's a beautifully shot movie that's horrible on every other way.

It's crazy that knowing things about a movie means you can make sense of discussion about it.

The argument that Skyfall is trying to criticize Bond's misogyny doesn't even make sense because that's not the only way in which the movie is misogynistic.

And, again, it's all framed pretty loving heroically.

Some teeth long for ripping, gleaming wet from black dog gums. So you keep your eyes closed at the end. You don't want to see such a mouth up close. before the bite, before its oblivion in the goring of your soft parts, the speckled lips will curl back in a whinny of excitement. You just know it.
