I remember watching The Ugly American (1964) in a summer college film course. It casted Marlon Brando and a future Thai PM, and ended with Marlon's televised plea getting ignored by the american public. It ruled.

IIRC they didn't scuttle the ship, it just sank on its own.

Can they really do that with the cargo, which presumably is the property of people/companies that have nothing to do with Evergreen other than hiring them to move their poo poo? That's gotta suck for Bob's Sprocket Factory to be told yeah, sorry, your shipment of No. 7 Spurling Flanges now belongs to Egypt, hope you had insurance for it.

I think the boatfucklers have won the arms race, can't imagine the truckfucklers be able to top this.

Furthermore, the boat must be nuked.

Well they somehow got it into this position, so why don't they just do the opposite. Removal is the reverse of installation and so on.

Thing is that what got it into this position is 200k tons * 15kph or whatever worth of momentum, which is quite a bit of momentum

Absolutely. The US government does it all the time as well. They'll publish the arrest of the ship and the court to file a claim in.

none, there's already a shitload of traffic going around the cape of good hope now. it adds time and fuel costs to the transit, but the only real result of that is delays and cost inflation that is dutifully passed on to consumers.

In rem is my favorite sort of lawsuit name. If no claimants step up because they can't or won't file, they sue the objects themselves to take possession so it's the U.S. v. Article Consisting of 50,000 Cardboard Boxes More or Less, Each Containing One Pair of Clacker Balls

Those are fantastic examples. I'm not sure if the Egyptian courts will use the exact same terminology, but if this was in a US court it would be United States v. SS EVER GIVEN.

Where are they gonna stop for gas on the way? Are there refueling ports, idk, in South Africa or something, or can they do that on the way with a tanker pulling alongside?

On the way with a tanker... i'm sure a good bit of the people still stuck are waiting on fuel, food, or security forces to get past Somalia without getting hijacked.

Russian navy oil tanker, I'm sure they can fend off pirates but a tanker is not exactly a pirate pursuer.

To paraphrase Bruce Schneier, if you have thought about it, then people who spend 24/7 coming up with terrorist plots thought of it a long time ago.

It's okay though, because now it's been brought to Egypt's attention that the canal is vulnerable to blockage and an important economic resource, so I'm sure they'll rethink their security procedures now that they know that.

The procedures involves getting way more bakshish by only allowing certified premium suez captains to drive through it, to be renewed yearly. You also need a straight line permit, only 400k annually on top of the usual costs.

Premium Suez Captains need to be Egyptian and can only be trained by the government. Their usual fee is 10% of your cargos net worth, they keep 5%,the other five goes to the government
