do you mean publicly subsidized trucking vs private rail?

But yeah, trucks determine the thickness of the pavement and cars determine the number of lanes. Most highway projects are about adding capacity then induced demand cancels it out, and a VMT tax on cars won't do anything for that.

Here's a fun thing about the inflation index for anybody who wants to throw this into a boomers stupid face.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/coreinflation.asp

quote:

Why Food and Energy Prices Are Excluded
Food and energy prices are exempt from this calculation because their prices can be too volatile or fluctuate wildly. Food and energy are necessary staples, meaning demand for them doesn't change much even as prices rise. For example, gas prices may rise with the price of oil, but you will still need to fill up the tank in order to drive your car. Similarly, you won't be pushing off buying your groceries just because prices are rising at the store.

Also, oil and gas are commodities and are traded on exchanges where traders can buy and sell them. Food too is traded including wheat, corn, and pork. The speculation of energy and food commodities leads to volatility in their prices, causing wild swings in the inflation figures. For example, a drought can cause dramatic effects on the prices of crops. The effects on inflation can be brief, meaning they ultimately correct themselves and the market returns to a balanced state. As a result, food and energy prices for these goods are excluded from the calculation of core inflation.

quote:

The government has a few resources at its disposal to manipulate the CPI. First, the Bureau of Labor Statistics operates under a veil of secrecy. The raw data used to calculate the CPI is not available to the public. When I asked why, I was told so companies cant compare prices. This makes very little sense because companies can easily compare prices with data openly available on the internet. It also makes it impossible to audit their findings. Additionally, over the past 30 years, the government has changed the way it calculates inflation more than 20 times. These methodological improvements to the CPI are said to give a more accurate measure of consumer prices. However, these changes could also be a convenient way to include or exclude certain products that give favorably low results. ~ Perianne Boring

Ok let's figure out the burden

https://policyadvice.net/insurance/insights/how-much-do-americans-drive/

quote:

The average US resident drives 13,476 miles per year and spends about $1,262 on gasoline.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_taxes_in_the_United_States

quote:

The United States federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. The federal tax was last raised October 1, 1993 and is not indexed to inflation, which increased by a total of 77 percent from 1993 until 2020. On average, as of April 2019, state and local taxes and fees add 34.24 cents to gasoline and 35.89 cents to diesel, for a total US volume-weighted average fuel tax of 52.64 cents per gallon for gas and 60.29 cents per gallon for diesel

https://gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/

quote:

Today’s AAA
National Average

$2.866 per gallon

1262/2.866 = 440 gallons per year

440 x 52.64 cents = $231.61 in gas tax paid per American per year

The Wing has five locations in New York City, Brooklyn, the District of Columbia, and San Francisco, with more than 6,000 members. It offers events like “Prenup 101,” and invitations to intimate evenings with notables such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jennifer Lawrence.

https://jezebel.com/how-the-wings-empire-was-built-on-trauma-racism-and-n-1844000985

quote:

In March, New York Times Magazine published a deep dive into The Wing’s growth and the growing disillusionment among staffers who regularly experienced casual racism from members and staff alike (“One [white member] eyed a photo board of Wing employees and remarked, ‘There’s a lot of colored girls that work here.’”)

quote:

Rude, entitled members, former staffers say, were part and parcel of working at The Wing. A former Chicago staff member who requested anonymity says that a member once quibbled with a black transgender employee about the grammatical incorrectness of their preferred pronouns: They/Them. In an email to Jezebel, this former employee also recalled a moment during Black History Month when the staff decided to screen Love and Basketball, to the displeasure of a white member.

“[She] had a fit and complained to front desk staff about how she does not pay for the noise and distraction of the movie and she was trying to get work done,” the employee says.

i cant find the article right now but i remember another article about The Wing where aoc was directly quoted as talking about how transformative and magical these spaces were, lol

I think this stuff also ties into the thing I was saying before about "optimistic progressive" types being poison. The sort of person who tries to always interpret things positively (and gets mad at other people being "cynical" for disagreeing with any positive opinions) is extremely easy to manipulate by social justice grifter stuff like this.
