Deadly fire at Bangladesh refugee camp leaves tens of thousands of Rohingya homeless

15 dead, 500+ injured, 400 missing, and 50,000 homeless. The fire lasted two days.

Chinese apps join celebs in backlash against Western fashion brands over Xinjiang

So Chinese apps are dropping western companies from their listings and celebrities are dropping endorsement deals as anger grows among the Chinese public over statements put out by western companies. Who are starting to backtrack:

quote:

The Human Rights section of H&M’s website hmgroup.com on Friday no longer carried the link to the 2020 statement on Xinjiang. The statement could still be accessed through the page’s direct address.

Statements expressing concern about or intolerance of forced labour in Xinjiang previously seen on the websites of Inditex, VF Corp, PVH and Abercrombie & Fitch were no longer available on Thursday.

China, Iran expected to sign 25-year accord, Iranian state media says

There was some speculation late last year over a $400 billion deal between China and Iran. The final details haven't been revealed, but since Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Iran on Friday and Iranian media is announcing it's signing then no doubt it's agree. I wonder if there's any defense-cooperation agreements or if it's purely economic.

it's been loving weird seeing, of all things, skechers as one of the lone western brands not taking the state department line, and they have far less to lose in china than nike does. maybe they're hoping to outflank nike, or there's some weird internal politicking going on we're not seeing

The Yellow Vests movement in France started when they ended the wealth tax and started taxing gas, since wealthy people tend to live in Paris and not commute. Tax by the mile would be super regressive.

Could 2021 US build the Hoover Dam or go to the moon?

Skechers actually bothered to audit their factories and supply lines and found no evidence of forced labour, unlike Nike which just swallowed the Zenz line on forced labour without checking.

The forced labour allegations are one of the weakest parts of the story because there's no supporting evidence, just 'concerns' about it.

More than 90 killed in Myanmar in one of bloodiest days of protests

A bloody day in Myanmar and the death toll continues to rise.

edit: Myanmar's armed ethnic factions will not stand by if more killed, says one group

quote:

“The Myanmar Armed Forces Day isn’t an armed forces day, it’s more like the day they killed people,” General Yawd Serk, chair of the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army - South (RCSS), told Reuters.

“It isn’t for the protection of democracy as well, it’s how they harm democracy...

“If they continue to shoot at protesters and bully the people, I think all the ethnic groups would not just stand by and do nothing.”

quote:

Many protesters are calling for the formation of a federal army and Yawd Serk said he supported that.

“The ethnic armed groups now have a similar enemy and we need to join hands and hurt those that are hurting the people. We need to join together,” he said.

Yawd Serk, leader of the rebel Shan State Army, was a major force in brokering current the peace agreement with the government and Shan rebel groups.

I wouldn't call it a civil war until people start shooting back.

The Egyptian military killed hundreds, maybe over a thousand, in a single day in the aftermath of the 2013 coup d'état.

if you read zenz's reports he even admits that its just about moving workers around, some of which are uyghurs for the goal of increasing cotton production and meeting higher quotas. using forced labor to punitively hand pick cotton wouldnt even make sense to these ends
