Urashima Tarō (浦島 太郎) is a Japanese legend about a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded for this with a visit to Ryūgū-jō, the palace of Ryūjin, the Dragon God, under the sea. He stays there for three days and, upon his return to his village, finds himself 300 years in the future.

The case in the EB strip is taken straight from the books. Yes, the kid with the teeth collection and everything.

I think I've mentioned it before but Holman was actually doing three comics at this time -- Smokey Stover; Nuts and Jolts, which as you can see is a single-panel gag comic; and Spooky, a Sundays-only strip starring that black cat that keeps showing up in the background in Smokey.

Yeah, I mentioned it to my mum and she was like "oh, I remember that!" and I... don't. Why the gently caress are teeth just falling out all over the place here? I'm suddenly worried about water quality.

Huh, what a damning indictment of Holbrook. I think I'll keep an eye out for Spooky though.

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

When your main character is "kid who memorized the encyclopedia for fun" the guest cast needs to be similarly quirky. Finding teeth barefoot, toilet paper collection, speed painter who used his... I think it was elbow?

There is nothing incongruous to Everett True being anti-union. He’s also anti-foreigner and anti-nontraditional masculinity. We laugh because he also despises and beats people who are generically corrupt or rude.

Ah well, no unstoppable source of vigilante justice is perfect.
I just want to mention that when True refers to 'beating and tarring and feathering' here, he's referring to a specific incident that came to be known as the Tulsa Outrage, where 16 members of the IWW (plus one innocent bystander) were violently rounded up by the police from the local IWW headquarters and promptly charged and convicted of vagrancy. That night they found themselves being 'transferred' back to the IWW headquarters by police when they were 'ambushed' by a local KKK sect who then took custody of the unionists and drove them out of town where they were stripped naked, tied to a tree, then whipped before being famously tarred and feathered, and finally as they watched the KKK burn all of their clothing in a bonfire they were told to never return to town.
It's worth mentioning that this wasn't (primarily) because they were anarchists or unionists, but because the IWW was vocally opposed to the war. One of their members had already been lynched for his antiwar statements, and a further one hundred and sixty of them had received significant jail terms for conspiracy to hinder the draft and conspiracy to encourage desertion.

Twelve by Pies posted:

The "rabbit license" thing confuses me even more now.

As I said before I know there's a group of rabbits who are resisting being murdered, which makes them outlaws. But how are they outlaws? If they give up their rabbit license, they're just "long eared rodents" which makes them technically omnivorous which means they're no longer necessarily prey, and that means since they're technically predators they should be able to fight back against animals trying to eat them without being in violation of the law, same as how Rudy can get into a fight with Vin and that's not illegal. I know they can't kill the predators since it's illegal to kill an animal except to eat it, but as long as they're fighting back with non lethal methods and don't have a rabbit license then they should be totally fine. But for some reason they're not.

Really, the bigger question this begs is why anyone would want a rabbit license at all. There doesn't seem to be any actual advantage to the designation.
