Cats gather and steal a lot of materials over the course of a quest and have lots of useful moves to steal more stuff/heal or buff you/disrupt the monster. The main benefit a dog has other than getting around is letting you safely sharpen while riding it which doesn't apply to gunners.

A cat with the summeown endemic life move basically guarantees you will always have 3 wirebugs without going out of your way to pick them up. That move alone makes them far more useful than dogs imo since having an extra wirebug is the most powerful buff in the game.

It never even crossed my mind to hop on the dog to sharpen in the middle of a fight. drat

Go find one of the other monsters on the hunt, do your two wirebug move, and it should be ready to mount. Then take it over to the monster you're hunting and go to town on it.

Oh cool, being extremely effective at making monsters mountable is a very good reason to use that move. That wasn't very clear from the in-game description of the move, but makes it more than worth using over the cocoon.

So are monsters that aren't the target of the current hunt more easily mounted? Because I've used the ability several times without it working on the hunt target

It really bugs me that the game highlights most of the NPCs with things to give you/request but not all of them. I wish there was just a minimap with clear icons for everything to do in the village and hub. It took me ages to even realise that the tiny desk by the dango cats was the canteen.

Binding "fast travel" to the select button made the whole villager quest thing a much better experience. Hit select, see if there is an icon next to the area name. Go to the area, and generally when you load in, whoever you need to talk to has a literal color coded speech bubble right next to you.

Also, set detailed map in Quests to select as well so you can fast travel easier. I also will swear by the setting to push R3 or whatever to use an item on your radial shortcut.

Lots of stuff that makes your life a lot easier that the game doesn't tell you.

The secret of greatsword is, not doing the slow stuff most of the time. For one, you never want to move with your weapon drawn longer than the distance of a roll and a tackle or two, when you need to reposition you sheathe and move, which is easier than ever in this game with the ZR+A silkbind that's a big step while sheathing + a damage boost. Second, you never want to let the recovery animations play out, they're almost all either dodge and/or tackle cancellable. And third, you don't pull out the charge until you get an opportunity to hit it without being punished. Which means usually GS is all about hit and run using fast wides and overheads to work around their attacks until you see an opportunity to hit them with a charge open up, and then how good an opportunity it is dictating how much time you can use skipping or comboing charges (almost always skipping the basic rear end charge, sometimes skipping the strong charge to go straight to true, or just doing a strong if you're short on time, or a double or triple combo if you're wide open). Also remember you can always tackle out of a charge if it looks like its going to go bad, tackles have guard frames and it will often set you up for another safer charge to punish their attack.

Once you get the switch skill to replace ZR+X with a forward dash strong charge, you're pretty much on rollerskates. GS is crazy fast in this game. You still need to be super aware of monster movesets and be good at estimating how much time you have to do things before it does something to gently caress you

I see. Thank you for the write up! Unfortunately I unlocked blast charge and now only want to play gunlance more but I’ll keep this in mind for eventually

I miss the food porn, feel like hunters would definitely eat much heartier meals than a couple dango sticks. I also miss the forges being busy with people/felynes smacking things with hammers. Both of the forge options in Rise are so quiet! Also, is the in-mission item box gone? Once in a while I forget to re-up my item set and don't have as many potions as I'd like.

Still there inside the tent, as always. It’s also where you can grab a meal if you didn’t eat before the hunt.

Did a couple of rampages this morning. You get so many tickets from them you can start pumping out charms non-stop once you get to the final hub tier.

It’s a good thing they had previously announced this and indicated this would be available in a few weeks so it should surprise no one. Also if you’re actually expecting anything resembling G-rank THIS YEAR you’re insane. We’re going to get the elders in a few weeks, and then a few title updates and events/collabs throughout the year. Rampage IS the endgame for now.

And I miss getting an automatic Arena quest every time you captured a new monster. It felt like part of the fun of trying to capture it first time.

I hope the first or second update adds a bunch of variants and subspecies. It seems so barebones right now that they would need to add quite a bit to make it have anywhere near the content of launch world or cross.

If you want to play the I-didn't-know-this-was-a-hippo-bar game with me, that's fine.
As someone who primarily has experience with world I love the variety of monsters in this. A bear? An Armadillo? An umbrella? A monkey that throws fruit? loving awesome.

World was cool but it definitely suffered from having two or three basic skeletons with a bunch of different poo poo tied to them.

Yeah I can’t fault the number of monsters in the base game at all. Non primary target mons seem to be way way easier to mount

... and this makes for a very easy means of getting free shinies from your target and staggering it

I’ve joined a few hunts where someone goes out of their way to mount the other 2 monsters then bring them over to the fight and yeah it makes the shinies rain. It’s pretty fun seeing the hunter on the map just loving off, messing with a monster on the other side of the map, then that monsters starts ZOOMING our way.

Tender Bender

I think it's important to note that the last few "from-scratch" monster hunters, including world, had their Complete versions ship a few more months or a year after the base game. In Monster Hunter 4, the base game didn't even ship outside of Japan, what we got was the final release.

I would suspect/hope that Rise's final edition is DLC like Iceborne, rather than a whole second release.
