It's not like "society is a con job by the rich to exploit you so there shouldn't be rich people" is a very difficult message to convey

Hatebag posted:Telling someone to read is a stupid deflection because if you know what the gently caress you're talking about you should be able to explain it without an appeal to authority It’s part of why I can’t stand the Rev Left podcast: so much of it is Breht going on about how easy to read theory is and how you just have to plop a worker down in front of a book and they’ll instantly start speed reading through it. That worker’s actual reaction would be the proper response to Breht in any context: shut up nerd.

I too have a broken ADHD brain that has made straight reading a book cover to cover extremely difficult as I've aged. One work around is letting go of the idea of doing things in order and just reading random chunks of a book and stitching it together. Its... not a great way to read, but it is *a* way to read, and that beats staring at a book and not being able to pick it up for months.

I have a much easier time comprehending long form stuff if it's audio. I think a lot of people have that same issue, but audio books are pretty expensive, and as far as I know, people without much money tend to not have much disposable income to buy things. But I'll have to get back to you all with the scholarly articles to back up this assertion.

I used to be a nerdy bookworm growing up (too bad I spent it reading techno-thrillers, the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and Harry Potter?) but the internet has definitely hosed-up my ability to read long-form and I had to re-teach myself. What I found works for me is to just set specific daily goals for myself: one chapter in a day, or 20 pages in a day, or 5% of the book (per the e-reader) in a day, whatever. And then I can put the book down and go on with the rest of whatever else it is I want to do, knowing I've accomplished something. Also, last year I happened across some random twitter comment of some dude with a globe emoji in bio bragging about how he read a dozen books in 2019 and I blew my top because what the gently caress dude you're bragging about reading a dozen books? So now I'm on a mission to overtake this nobody's record out of sheer spite. I'm up to 10 since the start of the year.
