I'm slightly worried on what's come past the embargo so far.

ACG hasn't been happy, neither IGN, though the latter is of course lol. Overall the metacritic is looking good so far tho.

how do they work?
I still remember people complaining about all the poo poo from the first game and I still have so many fond memories that i kinda want to just buy this to reward them for even trying. This genre is lacking good studios, would like to encourage em.

One of the 'complaints' I saw was "it doesnt diverge much from the first game, but if you were a fan of the first you probably wont mind that at all." Which honestly just makes me more excited that's exactly what I want

Yeah, literally all I expect from this is “the first game but we had enough time to finish it” so I’m good with that.

I remember that the first game had a very "this is all there is?" kind of reaction to the first ~2 hours of gameplay, and only once all of the gameplay loops were unlocked and all the plates were spinning was it able to get its hooks into you. If it's mainly just a remake of the original it will probably have the same problem and people doing light reviews or only giving it a couple hours will bounce off hard.

Nonsense. I have not yet begun to defile myself.

The first game had a weird problem where due to slowly unlocking all the neat toys, you didn't have full range to make the base you wanted until the second island literally halfway into the game. Also that it kind of railroaded how your first island had to be designed due to the tutorial quests. You didn't get access to building freezers until you killed an agent, which necessitated building a quick freezer sub-optimally just to stash the body. Same for power plants, you couldn't build one until you'd run out of power once and were left scrambling to power up your doors before agents waltzed all the way into your home.

This game also seems like it will reward a deal of mastery. People will have a lot of issues until they realize what they need to do. I see a lot of people skimping out on the specialists.

Yeah those review scores were about what I expected. Pretty solid all around with flaws.

Complaints about it being too much like the first game is so weird to me though. If EG was a long running series with a lot of entries that complaint would make sense. But it's been over a decade since the first, so what's wrong with it playing safe?

I've seen some complaints about too much micromanagement and the economy being wonky, but that happens in a lot of management games. Including the original. Plus it sounds like they've already done a patch on the review build, so the game will probably have support and fixes unlike the original. Are they opening it up for mods?

I've seen reviews saying contradictory things, so I'll hope for the best.

The ACG review seemed really odd, like a rambling stream of nonsense that didn't have a point . Other stuff sounded like he skipped the tutorial, at one point he was talking about how three different rooms all do mostly the same thing, but they don't?

Skimming a few reviews tje main complaints i see is bad minion ai and that the world map is annoying, which was true for the original too.

More annoying are the mentions that the writing is the same for each Evil Genius and mentions of endless tutorial popups.

You can make minions focus on doing certain things to exclusion of all others.

Also the Lines being the same for each Evil Genius is only on the Tutorial and starting stuff. Though I would have preferred if they had their own lines there too. Feels kind of wasteful to get four good voice actors and have them do the same lines.

On the other hand, I can appreciate doing this so you don't feel like you have to go through the tutorial every time just to see all the dialogue.

Mid day launches are the worst. Just do it at midnight and let everyone review bomb your game because it dipped below 60fps for a millisecond well your development team is asleep and won't get a patch out until the next morning.

Random question that might not be answerable until I find out for myself tomorrow:
Is it possible to have a room cut into the rock, but left with bare rock walls? (i.e. how the walls initially are when minions hollow-out the room) I wouldn't mind having my inner sanctum having jagged-looking rock walls, while the rest of the base has regular walls

Unless they changed from the first game, I suspect no- but that sounds suspiciously like a good mod plan.

first thing i'd try is building the room 1 square smaller on the edges than the dug out area. so if i dug out a 8x6 space, build a 6x4 sanctum

Assuming the building mechanics are identical to the first game, this would not be possible as you declare the room type when you give the dig order.
