Exploration is ill-advised.
The whole point of the movie was supposed to be pointing out how hosed up and yet normalised sexualisation of girls, especially nonwhite girls is, but Netflix went and marketed it as flat out child porn.

Agreed. The best (subjective) art in my PC’s files are all random screenshots from Skyrim w/an “extreme texture” mod. Or the YouTube videos where someone remade The Barrens in Unreal Engine 4.0. I do have some nice pictures on my phone of my son and parents in the Great Smoky mountains in the real world, but those are special to me because of the people in them instead of the gorgeous backdrops.

What are you talking about? I thought (and reread myself) of how horrible the concept even was, as well as being glad that not only 1) I never watched it, and 2) Netflix lost a bunch of money because of it. I also know that sometimes I am able to misinterpret my own writing. What outrageous thing besides “not wanting kids exploited” did my post insinuate?

Edit: sorry for the multiple posts in a row, too. I haven’t had time to read the last couple of days, and had 5x40 posts to consume this morning. I also post in line with when I come across something to post in response to because it’s not easy to append all responses in a giant “edit” with enough quoted to show exactly what I’m talking about. Unless it’s fast moving as a thread, it happens to me. On my PC it’s much easier to cut/paste 10 responses into one post.

You were getting angry at a random movie you didn't see in the Bitcoin thread. A movie the right-wing Twittersphere was in a tizzy about.

And your outrage at the movie you didn't see was garnished with really weird statements like "if an 11y/o girl even has a sexuality she’s been abused in some way" (when that's very much a normal age for developing sexuality, puberty sets in around that age) and "More upset at the parents than the kids" (so you're putting some blame on the kids, when it's clearly an issue with the parents and society sexualizing children).

I didn't see the movie either, but I'm also not going around posting my opinion on it to random threads.

Fame Douglas posted:

I asked a friend who is a senior developer at Netflix what the internal buzz had been about that absolutely atrocious poster that both grossly misrepresented the movie's take, and was 100% responsible for turning a Senegalese woman's movie about her own life experience into some kind of controversy.

His take was, the poster was a catastrophic mistake designed by someone who hadn't seen the movie; there was no malicious intent to use it as a marketing tool, and my guess is there may be some graphic artist(s) no longer in the employ of Netflix.

I don't know anything about Senegalese immigrants, but I already believe that "small child dance pageants" are some hosed up, abusive poo poo and since that seems to be one of the main points of the movie it would just be preaching to the converted. The :allears: thing was loving Ted Cruz making a firestorm about this.... when the exact kind of abusive pageant this movie is protesting is a very common part of the lovely culture in his home state. Hey ted, wanna stop kids from being abused? Awesome, let's loving take a hard look at the child "beauty and pageant" industry, because anyone who wants to die on that hill is hosed in the head.

Enough about that, back to how fuckin dumb NFTs and specifically CryptoKitty is.

https://gen0.co/

quote:

In the early days of CryptoKitties, the creators of the first NFT project auctioned off generation zero, or “Gen-0” cats, which are the ancestors of every cat in the game.

There can only ever be 50,000 Gen-0 cats as specified in the Ethereum smart contract making Gen-0’s have more value than most cats because of their rarity.

Gen-0 Kitty production stopped in November 2018 with only 34,928 in existence and this figure can be checked by looking at the smart contract function gen0CreatedCount on etherscan.

But surely no one is buying these things, I mean, err, wait...

Let's assume this was pre-spike and Etherium was only $500 a coin; that's still a third of a million USD for a digital cat. Put differently, that is the cost of owning 30 real cats for about 15 years, assuming you're doing all the opulent rich-person vet stuff that rich people do now.

I've thought crypto was pretty dumb but basically felt like I understood what was going on there. NFTs, I just don't loving get it, unless it's literally just crypto millionaires pushing money from one weird thing to another. That's definitely part of what's going on with old Magic cards, and why we have spikes like this: it's much easier to turn crypto into Magic than into USD in a totally untraced way, and then it's super easy to turn magic cards into cash with no paperwork. I think the CCG economy, and other similar things that are basically unregulated markets, are turning into a clearing house / laundering scheme for crypto.

You have some amount of organic growth here from Commander/EDH demand, but, a bunch of the hard spikes align with hard spikes in crypto.

That had me giggling waay too much and I woke up my Granny. I don’t know nearly as much about Etherium systems as I do about butts, but what I do know about it fell behind with the “smart, unchangeable contracts” of the DAO and the subsequent fork not seeming very “smart” or “unchanged” to me. But I will admit to not being a scammer, so have no use case for any of them. I can’t even handle getting $1+ too much change at McD’s without feeling guilty and even knowing a kid isn’t gonna get in trouble over it doesn’t help. The whole crypto economy is built on scams and lies, and some folks are really really intelligent but naive with money and fall into magical thinking while Russian mobsters swindle them repeatedly partly because they read the tech but don’t look beyond the tech for real life stories by others and just go by one or two people they never met saying “I’m E1on Musc and will give you BTC for no good reason.” Is there a good write-up or research specific to Eth from a skeptical standpoint? It can’t be more Byzantine than the time and money and opaque Lighting Network stuff.

It hasn't crashed yet. The New York Attorney General ordered them to issue a full audit of their reserves and they haven't done that yet. They hired a company in the Cayman Islands that did an attestation on their total assets. That report doesn't specify how much liquid USD they have. In fact the total assets would include bitcoin purchased with fraudulently printed Tether so the attestation is useless.

They are based in the Bahamas, which releases reports on total banking reserves. There has not been enough USD imported into the entire Bahamian banking system in the last year to match what Tether is printing. It's completely impossible they have 1:1 backing.

The thing is, they already admitted this in April 2019 when they said Tether is only 74% backed by USD. There was no crash when they released that information. I believe the NYAG audit deadline is in late May. Let's say that happens and it turns out Tether is 55% backed by USD. Will that information cause a crash when the revelation of 74% backing didn't? I don't know.
