Tbh it's not that bad, it's just weird as poo poo and the critics and people at the time had a massive knee-jerk reaction to it because of it being the sequel to an absurdly popular film.

It doesn't fit with the tone of most of the movie, which is a very low-key detective thriller with paranormal elements. If Promising Carl ends up watching it, I suggest they go check out the (filmed) original ending. It was extremely Coen-esque and it might be regarded as a classic if they'd gone with it. Exorcist III is honestly a really, really good movie. I really love Blatty's writing style and it translates great to screenplay.

Holy cow I didn't realize the latest blu-ray has the shorter version that Boorman made after the premiere. I've always been curious about it (also I think I might have seen the end of it on TV a long, long time ago, I remember it looking scarier). Too bad I don't have a blu-ray player. From IMDB:

The Exorcist was scary, to me, an atheist. Exorcist II wasn’t. Exorcist II wasn’t scary to my atheist parents either. Exorcist II was not scary. It was interesting and not at all bad, but it wasn’t scary. Pazuzu ain’t scary man, I’m like 75% sure he’s in pathfinder or D&D, so automatically not scary.

Reading about the blu-ray and I get to: Thankfully, Scream Factory opted to put both cuts of the film in their new release, offering a Boorman commentary on the longer one (along with a film historian on a second track) and a fun track from Mike White of Something Awful on the shorter version. https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2018/10/09/collins-crypt-the-exorcist-ii-is-memorable-but-is-it-good ...who's Mike White? Still worth watching though, some legit scares and creepy imagery that sticks in your head. There's a director's cut of sorts, but a lot of the footage was lost so they spliced in dailies and, in some cases, title cards. The result is a bit of a rough cut, but it's fascinating nonetheless.

What make the first film work so well, is powerful and skilled use of editing. It's done in a very stream-of-consciousness kind of way, and gives the impression that a LOT more time is passing than actually is. There's suggestive and subliminal stuff, flashes, the dream scene where Karras screams as his mother descends the subway stairs. It all creates disorientation and a real sense of dread for the viewer, which reflects the demon's will. Just a small example, if you ask a viewer who's just seen the movie how Father Karras reacted when he found out his mother died, most people will distinctly remember a scene where he has a reaction. But there is no such scene in the film. This has never been replicated in any of the sequels, or the TV show.

You can tell because it makes no sense at all lol. Cornwind Evil posted:It has one of the very best jump scares in the history of film, at least. Someone has that as their av and it's great.
