that's a mix though, some of it is surely poor communication. rather a lot of it is simply absolute nonsense, it can't be clearly or effectively explained because there's no consistent logic behind it.

in ontario we have a needlessly complex colour coding system indicating what restrictions are supposed to be in effect in each health region. then we decided we'd just mix and match anyways so that all the places seeing consistently high numbers could still go out for a drink. now poo poo's going wild and we've decided to apply the same lockdown toronto has been under for a month to the rest of the province, because that's clearly been working here.

there's no rational way you can explain this because it's clearly just arbitrary bullshit

they should've given the definition for the bubble thing in terms of graph theory. it's a bubble if it's a fully connected subgraph that has less than 10 people and the number of connections from people inside the bubble to people outside the bubble is less than or equal to 10 and no single individual inside the bubble is also part of another bubble. or something like that

if someone want to min-max that stuff then they can earn it by solving an np-compete problem

The only way for the public to think of the bubble in a way that makes sense is one of those line plot things showing who has had sex with who- "when you breathe with someone, you're breathing with everyone that person has breathed with"- just straight up STD messaging (not that people are necessarily more likely to take that seriously)

Entropic posted:

Honestly I think ruleslawyering would be a massive improvement over seemingly everyone in the country thinking "well I know I'm fine and my friends are probably fine, so I don't have to take any of this too seriously."

Not really since it's the same set of people- indignant assholes who just can't not loving sit in Smitty's for hours on end

Seeing stuff like "my boyfriend and I can't sit together in a restaurant because we don't live together, wow these regulations are just crazy" well the regulation should be no dining in at all. Also, anecdotally the people going out to eat were the bad tippers and big complainers in the before times too, the pandemic isn't real to them so there's no reason it should affect service in their minds.

Per wikipedia and subject to all the usual caveats there, the odds of catching it are from any given act are ... dramatically lower than I expected.

quote:

With regard to unprotected heterosexual contacts, estimates of the risk of HIV transmission per sexual act appear to be four to ten times higher in low-income countries than in high-income countries.[57] In low-income countries, the risk of female-to-male transmission is estimated as 0.38% per act, and of male-to-female transmission as 0.30% per act; the equivalent estimates for high-income countries are 0.04% per act for female-to-male transmission, and 0.08% per act for male-to-female transmission.[57] The risk of transmission from anal intercourse is especially high, estimated as 1.4–1.7% per act in both heterosexual and homosexual contacts.[57][58] While the risk of transmission from oral sex is relatively low, it is still present.[59] The risk from receiving oral sex has been described as "nearly nil";[60] however, a few cases have been reported.[61] The per-act risk is estimated at 0–0.04% for receptive oral intercourse.[62]
[...]
The risk from sharing a needle during drug injection is between 0.63% and 2.4% per act, with an average of 0.8%.[69] The risk of acquiring HIV from a needle stick from an HIV-infected person is estimated as 0.3% (about 1 in 333) per act and the risk following mucous membrane exposure to infected blood as 0.09% (about 1 in 1000) per act.
[...]
HIV is transmitted in about 90% of blood transfusions using infected blood.[41] In developed countries the risk of acquiring HIV from a blood transfusion is extremely low (less than one in half a million) where improved donor selection and HIV screening is performed;[13] for example, in the UK the risk is reported at one in five million[72] and in the United States it was one in 1.5 million in 2008.[73]

Those sex numbers are seemingly before factoring in "However, an HIV-positive person who has an undetectable viral load as a result of long-term treatment has effectively no risk of transmitting HIV sexually.[51][52] The existence of functionally noncontagious HIV-positive people on antiretroviral therapy was controversially publicized in the 2008 Swiss Statement, and has since become accepted as medically sound.[53]"

Seriously. This happens every time.

Also when we shutdown major thoroughfares so that people could bike on them during the pandemic, and when we turned a major east-west corridor downtown into a transit priority road. Every time they say they'll never drive downtown again.

If only.
