I'm having trouble narrowing down my choices too. I spent an hour the other day in the training area just trying out every weapon. My eyes kinda glazed over on the more technical weapons, some of those combo systems are a whole other game in themselves.

Similarly, I'm leaning light bowgun because the mobility is great but the special attacks on the heavy bowgun are just the best.

Its what I do and it's perfectly ok. Maybe not upgrading them all in tandem but being open to approaching monsters with different weapons is praxis, I believe. I mained swaxe and hammer but once I tried things like lance, CB, SnS/DB, gunlance, I completely smacked down some monsters that were giving me trouble with the swaxe.

i played for five and a half hours yesterday morning, slept for three hours, played for another four hours and had to leave for work. on arriving at work and setting up my switch i got the message that the game was discontinued.

my final match was in a lobby full of many of the absolute best non-japanese smb35 players in the world and members of a great community i've loved interacting with. i finished 4th, punching well above my weight because frankly i was maybe like the 15th best player in that lobby. a good way to go out.

the final match on twitch was won by the streamer and arguably the best player outside of japan. we're all in chat definitely not crying.

I'm sad that Mario 35 is gone now. My wife really liked it and was getting really good at it and I loved watching her play after work. She dropped the mic and retired a day early after she finally achieved maximum Lakitu, surfing along the clouds level after level. It was beautiful and I'll never forget it.

Yeah, this is bumming me out. I didn’t care about the remasters, but SM35 was one of the games that drew me in at first. I guess Tetris 99 will have to do.

I forced myself to beat Great Izuchi with each weapon before I narrowed down my choices of what weapon to use. I've played the series a bunch but there were still some weapons I've never touched. I usually try to narrow it down to 3-4 weapons, otherwise upgrading gets expensive real fast.

I bounce between Hammer, Hunting Horn and Dual Blades at the moment, with a smattering of Insect Glaive and Switch Axe here and there.

Hammer is my favorite thus far, but I use Hunting Horn more when I'm playing with my friends. Monsters get all the bonk!

This Mario poo poo is so amateur.

What Nintendo was supposed to do was quietly sunset SMB35 after launching a new online game or GBA NSO titles or something so that all the media and streamer attention would be focused on that.

Instead they killed Mario with nothing else to show for it, and for no real purpose either. Good job!

Hopefully so they can bring it back for a week or two every Mario birthday. Keeps the player pool healthy if it's only open for a limited time every year.

It's Nintendo they wont, they will try the same poo poo but with Luigi next year and make it bad somehow.

I burned out on Mario 35 when I realized I'll never unlock Luigi because no one ever picked the last two levels I needed, or if they did it never showed up until the end of a round when I've got 20 seconds left and the screen is filled with hammer bros

It was pretty fun though

It'll get cost and material prohibitive real fast.

HBG ruled in MHW world because with the Zinogre HBG and Guard Up you could face tank every non-instakill move in the game and just completely shrug it off. Though going to that from Insect Glaive was extremely painful since they're at the opposite ends of the mobility spectrum.

if your only experience with mario 35 was the first like, week or so, when the endgame meta boiled down to 'whoever can damage-stall the timer the longest wins' then i can see why you'd think this, but the reality is that the meta was still evolving right to the moment they pulled the plug, and all the best players were intentionally matching into lobbies with each other specifically to play against one another rather than just pubstomp their way to easy victories. it wasn't uncommon for there to be 10-15 of us in a match together, and when a few of us would go over to the japanese players' lobbies there were multiple instances where all 35 players were double stars.

even if you want to argue that the game would be 'solved' eventually (which to be clear, it wasn't, at all), almost every single aspect of it was handled client-side. nintendo could host a low-res 256 color bitmap on their servers and it'd prolly take more bandwidth than mario 35 did. there's really no reason for them to do this other than to say 'gently caress you for liking thing, now we take it'.

the only bright side is that since it was handled almost entirely client-side, there's already talks of getting unofficial servers up like with old wii and ds games (in fact how its online worked is apparently not at all dissimilar from the online for most games on those systems).
