it's a generational thing, I've had plenty of deep conversations about philosophy and space with other blue collar peeps under 40 because there's a certain baseline of curiosity about the world that almost no one born after the leaded gasoline ban falls below.

Meanwhile, boomers are mostly garbage no matter how much cheap university they had thrown at them.

At work I deal with a bit of UI design, and one of our challenges is getting people to read and obey obvious warnings when they're doing something really dumb.

Exactly what they're doing would doxx me a bit more than I'm comfortable with (hooray niche industry), but suffice to say that everything we tried from gentle reminders to literal red flashing warnings at no less than 3 stages of the process is insufficient to stop everyone from doing a pants-on-head stupid thing.

When we stop their order and call them up to say, "hey, you need to fix this huge problem", it's a mix of people saying "oh my God, I don't know why I did that, I'm so sorry" and "your software sucks, why didn't you warn me".

For the latter, I've occasionally been challenged to show the warnings when they they didn't believe me, and that usually makes even the most belligerent customer slink away with a "oh, yeah, I guess you did warn me...", but even then there's a certain kind of person who will just say "oh those big red messages, yeah I didn't read them, why didn't you add in a 4th or a 5th warning?"

Coincidentally, that's how the second and third level of warnings came about. Going from a simple on screen warning saying "you just did X, make sure you also do Y" to multiple red flashing warnings and pop-ups at different times did not reduce the amount of errors anywhere near as much as you'd expect. And, for the record, Y is something that really can't be checked automatically by the software for a variety of boring, technical reasons.

Point being, for something like the 11'8" bridge, there's just no warning that will stop a certain small percentage of people from barrelling straight into a bridge as warning messages, sirens, and lights blaze all around them telling them to stop or turn. You could project a hologram of their parents, grandparents, or partner into the cab of that truck with them who, in their own voice, pleaded with them to stop or turn, and people would still smash into it.

The people who will end up smashing into it now, after they've done everything they have already to give both additional warnings and time to process and react, they're going to smash into it no matter the warning. I'm sure someone more learned than I could tell you the exact name of the psychological phenomenon that leads people to look at warnings and do this:

https://mobile.twitter.com/reactjpg/status/1214775837058387969

but regardless, those people are out there and sometimes they get behind the wheel of a truck and go for a drive.

I figured the increased number of baseball cattes are because of the absent crowds last year and the much thinner crowds this year meaning that local cats moved into the stadiums, as large locations with little traffic and lots of shelter.

It would be unamerican to saddle a company with the financial burden of removal and safe treatment of waste. That would be taking money straight out of the owner's and stakeholder's pockets. The general public, if they wanted to stay alive, should have taken care of it themselves.

We deliberately released a bunch of water to stop accidentally releasing water, but then we stayed accidentally releasing water again, but less water because of all the water we deliberately released.

Sounds like they have it well under control!

BURY ME AS I LIVED, A FREE MAN ON THE CLUTCH

holy poo poo, this explains so much about all the apartments/houses i’ve lived in. my old place in brooklyn got so loving hot the only way to deal with it was throwing open the windows 24/7. it would be kind of awesome if it wasn’t so drat wasteful, i love fresh air

The overheating thing must have stuck around in building design forever. Every apartment I've lived, that has central hot water heat, has been so hot you want to die. The thermostat does nothing. It's there, but it does absolutely nothing. I used to always keep a window open in my apartments.

I lived in a place for a few months that got up close to 90 inside while it was below zero outside. I started freaking out because they'd screwed the windows shut and I couldn't breath. It was so hot. I ended up turning on the A/C in our bedroom to cool it down to reasonable. After that, I ran the A/C full bore all day for the few months I lived there. Utilities were included so screw them.
