lol the grift.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/apr/03/trump-money-bomb-scheme-republican-fundraising-2020

quote:

Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign used pre-checked boxes and obscure design on fundraising emails to wring millions of dollars out of unwitting supporters, detonating a “money bomb” which allowed the Republican to compete against Joe Biden in the last months of the race.
...
But, the Times said, “the recurring donations swelled Mr Trump’s treasury in September and October, just as his finances were deteriorating. He was then able to use tens of millions of dollars he raised after the election, under the guise of fighting his unfounded fraud claims, to help cover the refunds he owed.”
...
As the Times reported, refunds to donors are not unusual and can be made when individuals give more than the legal limit. The paper said that at the end of 2020, after Trump’s defeat, the Biden campaign and Democratic bodies made 37,000 online refunds worth $5.6m.

The Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee made more than 530,000 refunds, returning $64.3m.
...
Victor Amelino, a 78-year-old from California, donated $990 in September. It recurred seven times for a total of almost $8,000, the Times said.

Calling the Trump campaign and the RNC “bandits”, Amelino told the paper: “I’m retired. I can’t afford to pay all that drat money.”

Basically, they made it so that a huge numbers of donors didn't realize they were making recurring donations rather than one-time; took in over $64M that way, used it to fund the final three months of the election, and then ran the whole "but really I won" grift afterward at least in part just to get donors to fund the massive amount of refunds they owed.

Catching up on the thread from yesterday. My high school class was really smart and competitive but everyone has mundane careers. Although one guy - who was also my college roommate for a semester - served time for possession of child porn.

Fun fact: covid never made it to Queen Creek, AZ. Went to the olive mill there and their patio was full of tables crammed together with zero social distancing. And we stopped at a brewery where none of the staff wore masks which was way more uncomfortable than I expected.

The excitement of the trip was getting passed on the right taking an exit by a sporty baby blue BMW going way too fast and swerving in and out of traffic. It got way ahead of us. A few minutes later there's a big cloud of dust ahead. We come up to it and the driver apparently lost control, ran off the road, and mangled the steel cable guardrails, utterly destroying their car. Thankfully it looked like no other cars were hit and someone was already trying to help the driver. (Like 15 vehicles were already stopped.)

But from people I know from high school, a kid I knew from kindergarten up until we graduated became the chairman (or secretary, I don't remember) of the state GOP party for a minute, and a former friend tried to burn down the restaurant he co-owned while trying to commit insurance fraud

Re: high school. I barely remember my time in high school because I was incredibly fat and very, very depressed and despite the fact that I still have some lingering issues from that time in my life I still find it incredible that I pulled up as much as I did.

Serioisly though, lots of social anxiety still.

Gotta Hate Something
Happy Easter, TFF Goons. I have a story to tell, and it is going to be hard, but it is also something I need to tell.

CW: Descriptions of DV

I have been being both mentally and physically abused by my wife for a long time, and it finally came to a head early Saturday morning when she tried to kill me. The only reason she didn't is because my two older children came down and told her to get off me. I truly believe this, as I have no memory of ever being on the floor, but that's where I was when I heard them. I do remember her grabbing me by the neck and bouncing my head off of the microwave, but it's a little blurry past that. Also, as most of you know, I only have the one good hand, so I wasn't able to hold her off very well. She did attempt to use my broken hand to forcefully remove me from my daughters room when I told her to get out of there, because she was telling her not to talk to the police, because they were on the way, but otherwise, she surprisingly left it alone.

I am not going to go into too much detail, because it's traumatizing to think about, and likely to read, but this has been going on for a long time, not just with me, but my kids as well. She was more mentally abusive to them, since she would beat up on me instead. She would start fights, then wait for me to attempt to defend myself and use the defensive wounds against me, but would never call the police. She would always use the threat of taking my kids from me to keep me from trying to leave, and would convince me that I needed her to take care of the house. I thought I was stuck, and she kept reinforcing that feeling.

I know it's not my fault, but I can't help myself with beating myself up for not doing this a long time ago. I do know that yesterday was the first normal day I can remember in a long time, without the fear of when, not if, she was going to do something to ruin it. It was the first time I felt like myself in a long time, without someone ready to bring me down for looking at them wrong or something she imagined I did. I know I have a long road ahead of me, for both me and my kids, but I know that both my family and her sister have already been super supportive, and I will get through this with their help. Right now, I'm just going one day at a time, and that's all I can do.

For today, we are heading out to my mom's house and are going to enjoy our day, and I hope everyone does the same.

Absolutely awful 420, I feel terrible for you that you had to spend so many years with that knot in your stomach. It's so hard to think deeply or plan for anything when you spend every day in fight or flight mode. Your willingness to share your story tells me you are on your way to better places - after all, sharing is part of processing, and making yourself vulnerable like that isn't easy. Sunnier days are ahead.
