Is there some higher power fpga that would be 'next up' when current cyclone or whatever is out of space?

I still don't have one but almost thinking I'll wait for that.

It's probably going to be a long wait. As already said, Intel subsidizes the DE10 Nano to help get people doing FPGA development. Plus, there's no guarantee the next one is going to be better enough to handle next gen consoles, much less that you have people who are actively working on those cores - this kind of work get exponentially harder as you go up the console generations.

wolrah
May 8, 2006
what?
To emphasize the point of how subsidized the DE10-Nano is, this is the FPGA alone: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Intel-Altera/5CSEBA6U23I7N?qs=hFKXOjF5Mkbg493w%252BJXetA%3D%3D

It's over $100 more than the full dev board costs retail. Anything that's significantly more capable is going to cost well over $500 unless similaly subsidized.

Crackbone also makes a good point as well, the limits of the DE10-Nano are high enough that platforms beyond its reach involve hardware of greatly increasing complexity. That limits the talent pool who have the skills, knowledge, interest, and time to work on such things.

Most cores that don’t? Won’t. If it wasn’t an option for the original cabinet, it may not be available for the older set.

Yeah, I know, there are some that are running vertical that would be nice to have the screen flip. I'm trying to not have to unmount the plasma and flip it.

I might do that anyway for the switch pinball games that seem to only run vertical in one direction. Which is stupid, when It seems every other switch tate game rotates both ways...

The mister is getting put in a old Space Invaders cocktail cab with a 24 inch 16x10 ips, with the ability to plug into the plasma for huge Dodonpachi, Centipede, Pacman and such when needed.

Hey all, I got a Mister USB board from Misteraddons. One of the ports doesn't work so he shipped me a replacement and let me keep the (slightly) defective one. If somebody wants a Mister USB board with a bad port 4, let me know and I'll send it out to you for cost of shipping.

As far as I am aware, Jotego is on the level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OsQwkglUCk

Most of the drama around him is that his work is not open sourced /developed in the same way as most of the main branch MiSter cores (which is part of why it is not in the main update script) and there has been some scene drama with issues that he has talked about with the performance of some of the components on the MiSTer (which the other side will point out/accuse him of building his cores out of spec). Usually it gets ironed out because his cores are a huge contribution to the MiSter project and it's ultimately in everyone's interest that it all works.

There's an official MiSTer discord with channels for news and twitter-feed updates from the main contributors.

Also useful for debugging any issues you might encounter.

Anyone ever have an issue where nothing would respond via the USB hub unless you completely removed the power and started again? I had SNES controllers hooked up that were working, but I unplugged them for some NES ones, and all of a sudden, nothing would respond. Not even a keyboard after multiple reboots/resets. Unplugged the power, and it finally worked again and allowed me to remap the buttons for the NES.

Just odd.

My case finally came, for my Mister (with the Blisster board), from Portugal. Took a bit over a month to get here!

Quick question. It came with a little red thing, what is it?

Also, somewhat unrelated -
What do the User, OSD, Reset buttons do? I see that Reset does a reboot on the device. I'm assuming that the other two are core-dependent? What do they do, generally?

Though the battle might be endless, I will never give up
That's an audio tape input board. A few old computer cores can accept real tape drive input through that (or you could play a recording of a mp3 through a audio cable)

https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_MiSTer/wiki/ADC-in-(Audio-Tape-input)

If you didn't order it, it's odd you got one.

For the buttons, OSD button is way to bring up the OSD menu if you can't for some reason via a controller or keyboard, User is something that can be defined on the core-level but usually is just a means to do LCtrl+LAlt+RAlt (a soft reset of the core in question).

Thanks for the answer. Sounds great.

Yeah I have no idea why this thing was included. But in the retroshop.pt video where the guy assembles a few of these cases, he takes it out of the bag and throws it aside, so it must come with this setup for some reason.

It's still totally worth it, provided your TV isn't enormously laggy. I doubt that even 1/3rd of the MiSTer community is using CRTs. The MiSTer is one of the best ways to play retro stuff on a modern display.

Nate RFB
Jan 17, 2005

It obviously is heavily dependent upon how compatible your display is, but if the latency of the default buffered mode is too much for you the low-latency setting (vsync_adjust=2 in the .ini file) can absolutely work on a lot of cores with a LCD.

How long before that typically works its way into “update_all”?

The Voice of Labor
Apr 8, 2020

no idea, but installing it is a matter of d/l'ing the .rbf file and copying it to the _console directory on your mister drive. by far the hardest part of the process was resetting my patreon pw so I could log in. core installation is pretty easy, arcade cores get a little harder because they also have .mra files and you need to get the right rom set and computer cores usually need bios files and virtual drives and stuff, but a console core install shouldn't really give you any trouble

When/if sorg pulls it into the main branch or if Psylion adds it to the script as an unofficial core. At this point you’re gonna be doing it manually as stated before.

GBA got updated as well to have gamepad-mappable savestates through the same mechanism, which I have to admit is a little funky but I guess it's to save having to set aside even more gamepad buttons for save/load actions. Basically you have one single "savestate" button that while pressed enables start+dpad to do all saving/loading/slot changing.
