The dirtbag left obsession with catholism is one shared by the alt-right. I belive its mostly rooted in the aesthetics of power, but I wonder if part of it may also be an attraction to faith in a world run by bloodless liberals that believe in nothing. Evangelicals probably don't receive the same interest because of internalized liberal bias resulting in an image problem; western radicals will prefer a pedophile priesthood to lumpen, working class worshippers.

horseshoe theory is false but there are surface-level aesthetic similarities with the guys with the greek statue avatars, but i think a lot of those guys find themselves getting ejected from mainstream hard-right movement like QAnon. the "dark" weirdos of the right are inherently suspect to the militia guys and get beat up for being effete and reading yukio mishima novels. like nick land or somebody like that. but more often, i think those guys play at being cultured, like "i'm listening to beethoven because it's 'my culture'" and play at being deep but it's part of the same decadent philistine stuff which nietzsche took a giant poo poo on.

i guess another side of this coin is vaush. pretty bad overall, i've gotta say

This would be true if the measure of average was the arithmetic mean, but the arithmetic mean isn't the only measure of average :eng101: There's median and mode, as well as other kinds of mean...

what do you call the difference in wealth or income between median and arithmetic mean in a given country? does that factor into the gini coefficient?

it doesn’t factor into the gini coefficient but a gini coefficient of 0, perfect equality, would mean median and mean were equal, so in that sense you could see that value expressed in the gini coefficient as they’d correlate positively (higher gini, bigger gap b/t mean and median)

i dont believe this because it implies some disposition to socialism, or worse a sort of superiority, as if other people just arent able to receive it. it can imply that you didnt just by circumstance stumble onto what i believe is the most accurate way to view the world

there are so many paths and offramps, circumstances, choices you think you made but really didnt, that can lead one to a materialist analysis of history and politics - or lead you to sliding somewhere else entirely

really i see it as less “you would have found it anyway” and more “there but for the grace of god go i”

Sure, I don't disagree. To clarify I'm taking into account the road they took to discovering socialism, I absolutely don't think it's a seed that's planted at conception and then sprouts. D&D people took a different road in life with different challenges, and because of that the things we found convincing, they did not. I don't mean to imply they'll never find that one argument that will convert them. Or regrettably that none of us won't find a way to slide back into complacency.

I got the bug in my early 20's reading China Mieville. Went straight from libertarian to socialist off the strength of his argument for safety and social connection being the highest form of personal freedom. Everything since has been slowly putting the puzzle pieces together. Though I admit, a lot of that puzzle got solved in 2020 lol. A whole hell of a lot.

i came at my worldview from more a foreign policy perspective than economics or workplace democracy. my 7th grade english teacher spent two months having us pore over magazine advertisements asking us how they were getting us to buy their products to recognize marketing and propaganda. at the end of the year i tagged along with some college kids with Christ for the Nations in dallas where we went on a mission trip to israel to convert the jews. i was pretty horrified by the israeli propaganda contrasted with the reality of palestine. a kid with no feet begged me for money by repeating "no mother, no mother" and i've been dti dta ever since. the economic stuff came ~8 years later after a libertarian phase where i went to go hear michael badnarik speak and thought he was an idiot

I doubt that. I mean, I guess it's theoretically possible to come to actual socialism by way of convincing argument or from wanting to emulate someone you look up to, but I think for most people confronting their existing ideology is traumatic and requires you to be broken down before they're receptive. Certainly if they're in a position of privilege.
