Just be warned that basically every Xianxia protagonist will at some point do something horrible and mass murder a group of people even though not everyone in the group deserves it in any way. I've read multiple novels where the protagonist is usually a pretty good guy, but they will be ok with genociding demons even after the story had already somewhat humanized them and shown that they aren't all completely evil.

Also, XIanxia stories like to have things escalate way too much over minor conflicts, and a powerful organization goes into a full-out war because some random minor member got upset that the protagonist gave them a funny look.

In Forge of Destiny the main character annihilates a group of bandits in the middle of a larger fight that ends up killing her opponent and she is wracked with guilt after how easy it was which leads into some complicated thoughts on killing high grade spirit beasts that are sapient to feed to her turtle son

She also doesn’t hold grudges even the clan that forced her family into poverty and horrors she hates but is focusing on improving her mom and sisters life and becoming strong enough to never be trampled not elaborate revenge fantasies

She also has a boss and feels no desire to overthrow and crush them and said boss supports her desires and gives character freedom to chose even when giving her jobs to do which is novel.

Ling Qi is great. One of the best character traits of hers is that she actually takes time out from cultivation to socialise and not just disappear from her friends' lives for too long.

Says a lot that that's a notably positive trait.

idt is pretty odd in that it is mostly about medieval not-chinese politics. the mc's original goal quickly becomes subsumed by his need to constantly get stronger so as to survive all the political ratfucking.

This wasn't always the case, though; it became a big issue that she was sort of cold/distant from people as a sort of overreaction to social complexity and cultivators trying to manipulate one another, and there was some significant development with her growing beyond that and becoming willing to earnestly interact with others outside of her small closer social circle.

And even then, she still ends up growing apart from various people (or having them leave for circumstances outside of their control, like Xiulan).

On a strictly moral level, Su Ling is probably the most morally-good of all of prominent characters. She's the only one who seems to naturally care about stuff outside of cultivation - even Ling Qi has to sort of force herself to do so.

(spoilers only because I have no idea where the RR version ends)

There’s a difference between socialising at events among strangers and socialising with one’s friends. She’s one of the very few that I’ve seen actively work to maintain friendships, taking time out often to do so, is the point I wanted to make.

Thanks for this recommendation. The MC isn't horrible and the horrible people more or less have reasons for being horrible. It's not my favorite series, but it's relaxing enough to make good bed-time reading. Most of the time. I'm ~60 chapters in and the last 30 or so haven't been as farming focused as the earlier chapters.

The background is that a game company got their hands on really powerful AI and computer tech... and made a zelda/final fantasy/skyrim fulldive rpg using it.
So now they gave the beta version to a guy to playtest... and we see all this from the perspective of Qube, the AI of a female healer NPC who accompanies the 'legendary destined hero'.

The summary by the author describes it best:

quote:

The saying goes that when a man is born the Fates weave his destiny and swaddle him in it. Then one day the man dies, and the swaddle becomes a shroud. Heaven moves on.

It is audacity to question the Fates. Olympus is Olympus. The land of men is the land of men. To transgress that, to cross the line of divinity and scale Olympus Mons? To defy the Fates and cast off their threads?

That is hubris. It’s a mark that every philosopher bears plainly on their soul.

Some slavery depictions/descriptions but it looks pretty promising so far.

Ancient greece themed stories are kind of weird to me since it's somewhat uncomfortable when they don't deal with slavery. Slavery was a major part of greece and removing it feels whitewashy, like having an southern plantation-themed story that just search-and-replaces slaves to paid workers. But with it, your main characters are either horrible people or it has to dominate the story, you can't have a lighthearted thing.

So, speaking of FoD minor characters getting left by the wayside, how about that last SV update?

I am both completely blindsided, as it had legitimately not occurred to me someone might propose this, and also totally unshocked that miss "So this is what they meant by your luck." was the one to try it. Congratulations on your promotion to main character, Ling Yu Nuan!

Yu Nuan, one of the minor characters I can't remember much about, has asked to be adopted into Ling Qi's clan. There's a vote on whether to accept, refuse, or delay. I didn't check the vote myself, but it's usually pretty obvious which way the vote is going very early on. Not that you really need to see the numbers to know which way this one was going to go, tbh, nothing an SV thread likes more than new friends.
