My driving instructor (It was a private company, not through my school) literally signed his driver's license with the addendum "under protest" because he thought requiring driver's licenses were a violation to the constitutional right of freedom of travel.

He was otherwise a really good driving instructor.

(fake edit: the "under protest" part might have been about the second signature our driver's licenses had about allowing any cop who pulls you over being allowed to give you a breathalyzer without further consent, now that I'm thinking about it)

People are going to whine incessantly about vaccine passports for the next 3 months and then forget about it because once we have like 70% vaccinated everyone is going to stop bothering with it.

Though this assumes that we have 70% of the population that will actually get vaccinated, which I’ll admit seems like a stretch.

The NY Times did a thing on this a couple of days ago. White evangelicals are the biggest obstacle standing in the way of hitting that 70%+ number.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/05/us/covid-vaccine-evangelicals.html

quote:

The opposition is rooted in a mix of religious faith and a longstanding wariness of mainstream science, and it is fueled by broader cultural distrust of institutions and gravitation to online conspiracy theories. The sheer size of the community poses a major problem for the country’s ability to recover from a pandemic that has resulted in the deaths of half a million Americans. And evangelical ideas and instincts have a way of spreading, even internationally.

There are about 41 million white evangelical adults in the U.S. About 45 percent said in late February that they would not get vaccinated against Covid-19, making them among the least likely demographic groups to do so, according to the Pew Research Center.

“If we can’t get a significant number of white evangelicals to come around on this, the pandemic is going to last much longer than it needs to,” said Jamie Aten, founder and executive director of the Humanitarian Disaster Institute at Wheaton College, an evangelical institution in Illinois.

Yeah I talked with my boss about that. I'm all in favor of requiring the passports for things like cruises. For all the people that bitch and say "well I'm not cruising then", there are people like me who say "Only verified people with Covid-19 vaccinations will be allowed on the ship? Looking at fb profiles of people I worked with who come up in friends of friends I've found a couple people like this. The laziest person I've ever worked with has the pretty typical rural MN "socialism kills, dems are socialists", etc., but then it's interspersed with things about how much public good could be done with the inconceivable amount of wealth Bezos and Gates sit on. Some of the stuff it's like my guy, you are so close to getting it, then the next post is railing on Governor Walz being super left.

Basically this:

I don't really think there is a good answer because she lives in a totally different reality. We cannot even agree on what constitutes a fact, or that there are effective methodologies to help us figure out when something is true. She just has no discernible system of internal logic or critical thinking.

I also believe that she is afraid to confront any of her beliefs (religious, political, the distrust of science and medicine) because they are so heavily intertwined. At her core, my mom needs her religious beliefs to be true because she has been through a lot of trauma.

She did 20 years in an abusive marriage, she lost a daughter to a car accident, then she lost a niece (which she raised as a daughter) to suicide. She needs to believe that her experiences were part of a bigger plan that she doesn't understand (but god does) and that she will see her daughter and niece again one day. She has told me that this is the only thing that keeps her going, otherwise she just wants to die because she's so stricken with grief.

So if you start pulling at one thread in the fabric of her beliefs, she gets super defensive and uncomfortable and starts crying. It's like, "If I was wrong about THIS I might be wrong about other things." And she's so mentally broken that she cannot even entertain a conversation as seemingly innocuous as, "Hey, maybe climate change is actually true." without sobbing and accusing me of being deceived by Satan.

It took me 30 something years to realize that we are so different that our relationship can never be anything but surface level bullshit that I don't even care about.

So my dad has started down this path hard the last couple of years. Like full blown crazy/conspiracy stuff. Everything with Covid and the election has just made it worse. My son thinks he is crazy to the point that he's almost told him in his face that. My brother doesn't want to go out anywhere with him just because of the crazy poo poo he says like he's being followed and everyone is out to get him. If a company vehicle passes him or if a vehicle has some words on it, that is code to him that they are telling him something. The phones are bugged etc etc.

He won't talk to anyone so medication isn't a possibility and it will be ok because Rapture is coming soon and all the wicked people will have to answer for it then. It's really sad because this changed happened within the last 5-10 years whereas when I was growing up he was a rock and someone I looked up to as inspiration. So it's been hard seeing this happen.

Although my mother isn’t in quite as deep as yours, I’ve been through a similar situation with her.

She isn’t online at all (thank gently caress) but she is terminally FOX news poisoned, newly evangelical somehow without being a church goer, and a survivor of like decades of trauma that make rationality impossible.

This particular line hit hard. I realized just before our daughter was born that she and I can never really discuss anything of consequence because we are too different in basically all of our viewpoints and we don’t even agree on reality anymore.

Thankfully neither she or my dad have wandered into any social media conspiracy theory nonsense, and are still basically bog standard conservatives, but it’s disheartening to have so few shared points on reality that everything has to be superficial.

One of the defining aspects of the highly caffeinated conservative cable news sludge that Trump still chugs thirstily from morning until night is that it is hard to understand. It is intended to induce a state of heated clammy umbrage in the slack and softening minds of its consumers, and reliably does that, but it does this more through tone and frequency than by means of information. The point is to keep everyone watching both very upset and kind of curious about what exactly they’re upset about. This worked both on Trump and for him, but in no way can it be said to have made him more informed. Nothing on earth has ever really done that, but the idea is to repeat things enough that even passive viewers will be able to pick up the broad strokes, learn the heroes and villains and outrages and memes, get upset when they’re supposed to get upset and keep watching through the commercial breaks. Someone who watches enough hours of this will become not just familiar with but wholly conversant in all the salty phonemes that make up its language, but never quite know what the gently caress they’re talking about.
