I can’t believe the ump started to call strike three and then reversed it. Dude saw an opportunity to head home and took it. Bring on robot umps. And that it wasn’t reviewable - what the hell?

I'm not sure roboumps would have helped in that spot though. They're not going to have a machine decide if somebody leaned intentionally into a pitch or not, that's still going to be a human judgement call even if you have K-Zone 9000 calling balls and strikes.

That’s fair. I got carried away wanting to punctuate my conspiracy that the ump wanted to go home instead of being constrained by not being able to review the pitch the way it needed to be for the correct call.

Umps suck sometimes. This play was so close i guess people love controversy. His leaning into the pitch, could have been a .0005 second attempt to hit said ball. I was golfing today and when i saw this story i figured it missed him by a mile. SMDH. Again the first thing i thought was that the pitch missed him by a mile and the game was over. Seriously? Look at it again at full speed. This poo poo happens every day in baseball, mostly on strikes and tag outs. I for one welcome our new drama overlords.

If it’s in the zone his intension is irrelevant: it’s a strike. The most famous example of this was in the middle of Drysdale’s scoreless inning streak.

Can't even jokingly refer to him as 'Mariners Legend James Paxton' for having that happen on a one year contract because he's pitched for them before. This really sucks, I hope he recovers well.

Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but there's gotta be a chance that's just it for him, right? He's 32 now and if he went under the knife he wouldn't be back until age 34.

One positive is he's hitting offspeed stuff, like if he was only teeing off on fastballs then you know he's gonna stop seeing them but he seems to just be hitting everything. Would be cool if he just took the league by storm and won a MVP out of the blue.

Doctoring balls is one of the lesser things he's done. Most/all pitchers do it

The league is salty Bauer made public fools of them for their hilariously lax enforcement of the ban on grip substances, so they came up with new, stricter rules this year and unsurprisingly they're not actually interested in putting in the effort to enforce them, just using them to try and catch Bauer red handed so they can punish him for being a shitter about it.

Which - don't get me wrong - I absolutely hope they do because gently caress Bauer, but the whole grip assist situation will continue to remain murky unless it's addressed in the upcoming CBA. It's clear MLB and the umps don't really have the desire to invest time and energy in proactively enforcing it.
