gently caress is they're still a bunch of people trying to come to the US from Cuba on rafts? Like it made sense in the 90s enen their entire economy collapsed when their biggest trading partner disappeared and it had to adjust to crushing US sanctions.

but whether it's bad is independent of whether there are queer space socialists in it (because, of course, star trek has always had queer space socialists)

It's weird that trekkies are so quick to poo poo on a new show, they all seem to have at least one bad season to start with anyway.

The Look this B-List character who doesn't have lines in half the episodes said husband instead of wife when referring to their spouse!". They really make sure to never mention anything that could really be considered "socialist" anymore, in fact things in both of the new shows seem downright Capitalistic. Since now the Federation apparently has poor people and money and stuff again.

Feldegast42 posted:Trek died on 9/11 when everybody gave up on the future ever getting any better You could see the 9/11 stink infecting Enterprise when it aired but there was still enough residual 90's optimism in the tank for the show to run of its fumes for it's 3 seasons. Even if it's a noticeable downgrade from pre 9/11 trek. But once that was done yeah, American Media Corps have no room for Trek style utopianism both because it doesn't keep the proles afraid of the other, and that Utopianism requires you to say "The current system (in this case Capitalism) should be replaced". Back in the 90's the Elite could allow Trek to get away with the latter because the system seemed stable enough and the masses comfortable enough under the economic boom that it's not like anyone would actually call to abolish money. And with the fall of the Soviet Union and the End of History it's not like the peasants would seriously consider any Left-Wing alternatives the show presented. Now all of a sudden the whole system is falling apart and isn't working for even the Educated White Middle-Class. So telling the people that they could instead have a different system is a lot more dangerous.
