No its terrible for your heart and like the main cause of death for body builders and people who are 8 feet tall is heart faliure. Your heart has to support all of your tissue and it doesn't matter if its muscle or fat. The work that the heart does grows cubically x^3 as you get larger and eventually you get Randy Savage. NFL players have a life expectancy of like 50.

This man is slightly overweight based on BMI: It's not a dumb measurement, it's a population measurement. So yeah, it means gently caress all for an individual and shouldn't be used the way most people use it, but that's not BMI's fault. It's still a problem if the BMI of 300 million people averages like 32 or whatever. It's pretty much analogous to how a 1% kill rate for COVID is super bad for the population as a whole but not a huge risk for any given individual

JAY ZERO SUM GAME posted:bmi is for populations, not individuals so is vaccine efficacy. even so, higher BMI's are pretty strongly correlated with lower quality of life, worse health outcomes, and lower life spans. it's a proxy measurement that's imperfect, but it is useful. SchnorkIes posted:Is it even healthy to be a huge muscle beast? I thought the healthy body type we're all supposed to have and which cavemen had is marathon runner guy. people with very high muscle mass face some of the same heart problems people with very high fat mass do. health is a really nebulous concept. is it a measure of incidence free lifespan? or is it a measure of current capability? on average, relatively skinny people tend to live longer and have less negative health outcomes.

But what if they are all professional athletes, smart guy??? e: JAY ZERO SUM GAME posted:probably the first guy I posted is Derrick Rose, who's 6'2" and 200lbs. He's not some enormously tall guy or some huge muscle freak like The Rock. He's strong but not excessively so, and he was a good basketball player because of insane athleticism rather than size. Tennis Pros are also generally borderline "overweight" because they're fit and muscular but not powerlifter/bodybuilder sized. Anyway yeah maybe BMI is fine for populations but for individuals it's not that great. brugroffil has issued a correction as of 15:50 on Apr 9, 2021 |

Since we're having this derail, the people I listen to on this sort of thing are the doctors at Barbell Medicine, who recommend using a combination of BMI and waist circumference to evaluate risk from excess body fat https://www.barbellmedicine.com/blog/how-to-measure-your-waist-correctly/ Tldr BMI >30 ("obese") is definitely a risk factor for heart disease and diabetes, BMI 25-30 ("overweight") depends on waist circumference since being muscular can put you in that range

Yeah, I guess I shouldn't have implied it's worthless at the individual level, it's more of a quick n' dirty check for "should have their weight situation given closer scrutiny" but isn't a definitive measure on its own
