I mean the only reason I wouldn't believe it is because to say you "stan" something was and is a really stupid loving way of expressing you like something. I genuinely thought it was a stupid Jojo reference for like six months after it started popping up. It had the exact same kind-of stupid energy. It's like the youth decided to make "fetch" happen.

I think 'stan' is kind of a fascinating example of the evolution of slang. Sure, we know that 'fan' comes from 'fanatical' and on the surface that kind of makes 'stan' seem dumb and superfluous. But there's more context at play if you listen to the namesake song, that to my mind explains why someone would adopt the term to express a particular degree of unhealthy obsession that synonyms or adverbs either don't accurately convey, or aren't concise enough. Brevity, innit.

The weirdest part about 'stan' as a term isn't the verbiage, or that such a term evolved in thee first place. It's that a term born primarily from the nerdiest and most female-dominated subcultures came from an Eminem song. That's like learning that a term in professional basketball had its roots in knitting. Nothing wrong with it as a term, probably very useful, but no idea how it got there.

Brevity, innit. That's only taking it halfway! It started out as you say, but as is the case with a lot of slang it's softened now to not have the negative connotation and basically just means devoted fan (or not be meant to have one, obviously a lot of people still see it as a bad thing). I think that where it's really interesting is in using it as a verb to express fandom as a behaviour. There isn't another word for stanning someone, "being a fan of" is too passive.
