The SA web proxy was removed from the GitHub repo back in january I think (I had to go digging around the commit history to find it). I ended up modding the original software to fix some issues (iirc there was a missing HTML un-escape in the data stream so <>s in posts would show up with the HTML escape code etc.) and adapt the HTML template a bit to work well with iCab 2.9. Note sure if it's ok with the author to re-host that version somewhere. WebOne proxy works very well for me for non-SA stuff, it can be configured to do various patches including re-compressing images and converting formats (including re-sizing as required to avoid loading megapixel size JPEGs or PNGs). One slightly non-documented feature is it can do a decent job of converting unicode to a codepage old browsers understand, I use "OutputEncoding=1252" in the conf file since that's the "default" codepage in most contexts. However, there is a bug where it can't proxy to localhost, so I have to run that on a separate machine vs. the SA proxy. -- Now running ~dual monitors~ on the Mac, I got a miroGraph Chroma v3.3a card for a decent price since there was some surface rust on the connector. It's unaccelerated, so very slow compared to the PaintBoard Lightning, but it's 1024x768 24-bit capable. Did a write-up on it here: http://longview.be/mirograph-chroma-v33a.html, it wasn't entirely trivial to make it play ball with standard VGA monitors. longview has a new favorite as of 11:56 on Apr 8, 2021 |

When I was a kid I got a similar device for free as like some kind of survey/trial thing, can't even remember if they telemarketer called me or I signed up online for it. I got the device and it was terrible and I used it just once or twice to check it out. Some months later they started sending notices that I was to ship it back, which I said hell no I'm not gonna bother. They ended up sending a UPS guy to my door demanding the box back, so I gave it to him. The whole episode was very strange, the device totally sucked, but having a delivery guy demand goods from me was just so weird I never forgot about it.

I've reuploaded the repo here and I pushed a bundled release so anyone should be able to try it without having to compile it. I nuked it from the other repo because I was going to take that code and build it into a more Generic solution, but I got stuck on how to design something where it would be easy for those to add their own templates and parsers outside the program, and between that and general life stuff I put it on hold. I don't have time to get back to it, but if anyone wants to add stuff to it, don't be afraid to PR. I'll be happy to accept stuff . WebOne is an interesting approach to it, but I'm more interested in re-rendering the pages to work on the old platforms. If I go to Twitter with WebOne, I don't think it'll work because it's an SPA and those old browsers just can't handle that, even with the SSL stripped. But if you proxy the twitter requests and re-render them into the very old Twitter mobile site? That could probably work. edit: trying out that webtv viewer Yeah, there are encoding issues I never got around to fixing. Beyond getting the right encoding from the forums, the other part is sending better HTML to fit whatever browser requests it. And the app does proxy images, but it really does need compression do actually render stuff better on these platforms. Drastic Actions has a new favorite as of 15:09 on Apr 8, 2021 |

Absolutely, with the Awful.Web interface WebOne is only really useful for image recompression, scaling, and format conversion. Another fix that helps a lot is emitting one <table> set per post and messing with the width tags/CSS, that reduces the effect of page-breaking with big images and long lines in <pre> tags or similar. But I'm pretty sure that wasn't fixed for a long time so it depends on how authentically awesome it's meant to be.

IT'S ALIVE !!! Tray-loading Tangerine iMac, 333MHz version, running Mac OS 8.6. This one unfortunately does have the flyback transformer fault they all seem to develop after a while. It manifests as an occasional flicker of the CRT, with a buzzing / arcing noise coming from the back. It doesn't seem to happen unless it's been running for a while so when it happens, I take it as a sign to shut it down and let it cool down. And my god does it get hot, Steve Jobs insisted on passive cooling for everything but the CPU, and even that's passively cooled on later revisions, which is apparently what causes the flyback transformer to fail in the first place. It even came with the puck mouse, although not a matching colour. I don't know what Steve was smoking when he came up with that one. It's not so bad once you get used to it but come on, it's a mouse. You really shouldn't have to get used to it. I found that PowerBook G4 at a primary school back when I was doing IT support for the Victorian public school system. This one was apparently purchased for a teacher who left shortly afterwards, and it sat largely unused in the server room for years. It was just too cool to just let it get thrown out as e-waste so I took it with me. As you'd expect, the battery is completely shot through. I've got it running Tiger 10.4.11, and it's come in handy as a go-between for things like burning discs for use with older Macs. Which brings me to the real reason I have it... One of my classmates had a bondi blue iMac and was a big-time Apple fanboy, so I -- with my 350MHz AMD K6-2, 64MB RAM and Riva TNT 16MB -- obviously had some real one-upmanship going with him, always trying to find another thing Mac OS 9 or Windows 98 did better than the other. My PC got better FPS in UT99, which was his favorite game, so I always had that to boast about. The iMac certainly looked a lot more fancy and futuristic than my beige AOpen tower and generic Targa 17" CRT, that's for sure.

Until it gets slightly rotated under your fingers. E: still better than those weird Sun optical mice that ran on a special gridded mirror-finish mousepad that was tiny and ALMOST square and the grid lines were slightly further apart in one direction than the other, so if the mousepad gets rotated 90 degrees (perhaps as a prank by a coworker) it goes all fucky Data Graham has a new favorite as of 16:18 on Apr 10, 2021 |

FilthyImp posted:Love to have a wireless mouse that is unusable when plugged in because Apple specifically wanted to forbid people plugging it in and ruining the battery I imagine you're referring to this brilliant design? Looks more like they just didn't want to break/split/alter the curve of the top section. Design to the detriment of function, and all. They'd love it if people ruined their batteries so that they have to replace the mouse every other year, though. I don't understand why you'd want to have a wireless mouse plugged in during use though. Does it have terrible battery life or something? My logitech vertical only needs a 2-3 hour charge each month or so. If I managed to run it dry while working, I could just plug it in, go make a cup of tea/go to the toilet, and by the time I returned it would have gotten a couple hours worth of use from that 2-3 min charge. Also, tech relics: 'gaming/work' oriented keyboards that aren't just overpriced mechanical keyboards that maaaaybe have a numpad or media keys if you're lucky. I miss the mid 2010s where a 50usd+ keyboard would generally give you a numpad, media keys, and a ton of macro keys. (I miss my dead logitech g19. If they remade it again without the screen I'd grab one at a reasonable price. ) It seems like if I want a decent set of macro keys and the like I might as well get one of those 1-hand keyboards that are designed to be super-remappable/mmo oriented, with how the market is currently.

The Magic Mouse design is easy to laugh at but quote:With the Magic Mouse 2, it only takes two minutes to charge the batteries enough to last a 9-hour workday, though if you leave it plugged in overnight Apple claims the batteries will last a whole month. you can literally charge it while going to the bathroom, I don't think anyone has ever had an actual issue with it.

I do have a super-compact wireless mouse that sees occasional use, traveling along with my laptop. (Where if the battery dies, the touchpad is still right there.) But for the computers that generally stay in the same place, it's wired mice for me all the way. No battery to die, no lag, no way for it (or its USB nub, if applicable) to get lost. What's not to like?

I worked in a Mac-centric office when the G3 iMacs were current, and we actually had plastic adapters that clicked onto those idiot puck mice to give them a usable shape. When I realized that Macs could use normal 2-button mice it was a revelation, and I switched over to those instead. gently caress your weird aesthetic, give me usability. That said, those G3 iMacs are far from the worst computers to take apart and work on. The eMacs were worse, and the iLamps can gently caress off forever.
