on top of the logistical issue, I felt like the game did a good job of making it clear - you are just one dude, a cop without much actual power, in a place that's got several groups already in control of all the power. your ability to alter the events that have already been set in motion days/months/years in advance is going to be pretty small.

That, and Marxist historical inevitability. The workers will rise up because they can't not. Capital will resist, because if it did not it wouldn't be Capital. The class warfare will keep on raging, until Real Communism is built.

Sounds like what someone building a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world would say.

(A sly joke there is that, despite the devs being socialists themselves, Mazovian Socioeconomics is just about the worst thought of them all to hold - having it costs you three levels (2 in stats, 1 to open the cabinet slot) but even with the XP bonus for mouthing off there aren't enough options to talk about communism to earn even 2 levels.
Compare and contrast with Art Cop, which heals you all day long and pays back for itself in 20 Conceptualization checks, of which there are literally hundreds in the game)

Like Bar Ran Dun said it's really more of an adventure game, a video game with a whole variety of video game elements doesn't really turn into a visual novel just because it primarily focuses on dialogue. Basically as much reading as you do in DE, you would likely never say that you're "reading Disco Elysium" like you would with a novel, visual or otherwise.

...I'd totally read a Disco Elysium VN though, all the stuff that happens in this game could make for one hell of a CG gallery.

What? No I couldn't. It not only contains a character progression system which contains interesting choices, which is what an RPG video game is, but it actually goes both ways - you can change the way you play the game to acquire different elements for the progression system, and the progression system offers appreciable differences in the way the gameplay operates.

The gameplay, in this case, being map navigation and dialogue trees.

I think I found the problem, at least for me: I had turned off steam overlay. I turned it on, loaded an old save and completed the commie vision quest and got the achievement. Unfortunately this doesn't retroactively give you achievements for your save's stats. Like all the times I said commie stuff and I AM THE LAW.

Hello, I'm playing through the game for the first time and loving it, etc.

I'm on Day 2 and a little stuck on if I've just sorta hit a limbo until time progresses further:

I've spoken with and exhausted every dialogue option I've had with everyone. Joyce, Cindy, Housekeeper, Real Estate Agent, done the bookshop quest, dice lady, pétanque people, pawn shop, guy by butter sign, pawn shop guy, guy who sells stolen goods, truck driver, scab, guy on railing at picket line, Measurehead, Frittte girl, everyone in Whirling-in-Rags (Garte? Titus, lawyer, cook, cryptowife), radioed out, Cuno, Cunoesse, smoking guy (to exhaust the totality of what I've done). Presently I'm just waiting for 9pm for the smoking guy to show up again, waiting for dice to be made, and waiting for the water lock to be fixed and for the police to radio back re: serial numbers. I've tried redoing the Measurehead thing to just knock him out but right now if I fail I just get a game over. Body is still up on the tree because I hosed up shooting him down, backed out of what I'm guessing was an option to rip him down, and think I locked myself out of having the Union do it.

Am I just left waiting, now? And if so, is there any way to speed it up? Feel like I'm missing something.

You could try one of the other ways to get into the Harbor. There are three.
You can speed up time by sitting at a bank, if kim is away. By reading a book or playing a boardgame otherwise.

if I'm parsing this right, you're missing something, because I don't think you can lock yourself out of the union getting the body down. I assume you entered the harbor based on listing Measurehead in there. did you find Evrart?

Buy a book or boardgame and read it to pass time. Also useful if you are trying to internalize some thoughts.

Examine weird bits of construction material in the back yard.

Also, when talking to the truck drivers to solve a thing, you will need to retrace your steps a few times. Your journal does provide useful advice on tasks sometimes.

Remember to pay for your room.

EDIT : Rarely, a new option will appear down a grey-ed out dialogue tree. The first option there will not brighten up to tell you this.

Interesting. There's a few things I think may lead elsewhere like the cobalt kitchen door and the "roofing material" covering a passage by the greenhouse but I have no clue what to do with the former and I'm skill-locked out of the latter.

I certainly don't have the option anymore, going over everything with Titus again. I have not. Measurehead is still blocking the button that opens the door. I think I just chose a shithead option when I failed the re-do and it instantly killed me. I did try again but I failed anyway so, locked out again. I understand, at least I think, using medicine.

As for the body. Titus is not the boss man of the Union and not the man to speak to about it.

Probably time to blow some skill points and unlock those checks. Maybe save before trying again. Or just kill time.

okay, cool. I can factually tell you that nothing "instantly killed" you, though. you have like 10 seconds to use a healing item before you health actually hits zero, and you can use it literally any time, including in conversations. in any case, the chief thing you haven't done yet that you could is getting into the harbor.

there are three ways to do this.

1. internalize measurehead's Advanced Race Theory thought (doesn't necessarily mean you agree with him, just that you ponder it)
2. beat the poo poo out of him instead
3. find the door behind that pile of roofing material, climb up, and make the jump

you can certainly just gently caress around instead if you like, that is as "valid" or whatever word you want to use as anything else. mostly I want to be sure you understand how to interact with the systems, eg. by leveling up a skill in order to reopen a white check.

ah! okay, yeah. DE's systems are pretty simple, but it doesn't take the time to explain itself super clearly. white checks are repeatable - if you try and fail, you can reopen the check either by leveling the relevant skill or finding something relevant out in the world. eg. you're looking for something, make a check and fail, but then you talk to somebody else who says "oh yeah I heard maybe it's in a closet," making the check reopen with a bonus labeled "+1 Got a hint from Martin Martinaise" or whatever

in contrast, red checks are one-and-done. either you take the chance when you see it or you never do

the real disco elysium starts here

hot tips: quicksave is F5. the red/blue bars above your portrait are your health and morale, and there are red/blue pluses with numbers above those, that you click to use a healing item: the numbers are how many units of healing of that type you have. so if either one is zero, maybe go buy some drugs at frittte. nosaphed is 1 unit of health, drouamine is 3, magnesium is 1 unit of morale, hypnogamma is 3

Nobody move and nobody gets hurt.

I think I'm getting close to the endgame (current task is to ask about Ruby in the fishing village), which is making the two progression bugs I'm dealing with all the more frustrating: game freezing when I climb to the top of the monument, and the sandcastle not being interactive.

I've had some good times though - passed the check to take a nice moonlit walk with Lilienne, successfully danced and got everyone else to join me, realized that Klaasje was tricking my skills with her feminine wiles, etc. Still haven't come across this sandwich you all were talking about though
