$20,000 in 1952 is about $200,000 today, which is a lot but maybe not crazy given that the scout is literally on his knees begging the kid to sign on. $10 a month in ~1922 is $2,000 a year today, which is theft.

This was the best Axa storyline we've seen to this point, by far. It turns out, having your protagonist actually do things makes the story more interesting! It had a few issues (I am very tired of Dirk, and the whole "poor people devolved into gross mud-monsters" thing is, uh, not great), but I enjoyed Axa having some agency and fighting things, as well as the fantastical nature of the sky people. I'm also quite fond of the ending where Zeph basically founds a religion about evolving into bird people by falling to his death.

I'm quite interested in this one because on its face it's a "those spoiled athletes", but also notably in the first panel the stands are completely empty - the amateurs are playing to nobody for the love of it; while in the second, the stands are packed with people with what I guess are 'excitement' lines exploding off them, while the manager - though rejecting 20k for an amateur kid - is still opening his bid with ten thousand dollars and a new car because he's so desperate to sign him he's literally sweating.

Despite seeming to be a nostalgia strip due to the hybrid Asay/Kelly presentation I get the impression that we're not supposed to always interpret the old days as being better. It just seems like that because we're not used to seeing the format used in any other way.

It's much more of a Ruth line. She's normally the misinterpreting and performative moralising boomer-bait character. It seems backward having her be the reader stand in rather than railing at the perceived cruelties inflicted by rich girl so she can draw the patronising, "aren't kids dumb" chuckle response.

Yeah, the literal wording is like "for managing body fat", so it's not reduced fat tea (tea has no fats!) but rather a tea that advertises itself as part of a way to maintain your body - although almost certainly as an appetite suppressant rather than pizza chaser.

It would really help this comic if we had ever seen any evidence at all of Brenda actually doing her job. Like, just a panel of someone holding a newspaper and saying "Nice job on the <whatever> story, Brenda!" or a headline with her name under it. Because the impression one gets from the way she's constantly going on holidays and coming up with excuses for not working, it just seems like she's never done any actual journalism in her life.

Thanks for doing all this archival work for Dark Laughter! I’ve really enjoyed it. When you started posting it I was surprised at how modern it felt...then I realized it looked modern largely because it’s so rare to see Black people in the vintage comics (who aren’t drawn like Ick, anyway).

And thanks too for posting all this Gladys Parker! I prefer the single panel Mopsy over the Sunday strips (those are good too tho). One of the things I love about Gay and Her Gang is how much they move between panels - it makes me think of old movies, with all the characters pacing around frenetically while quipping.
