Whoopsie doodle, shot a guy. We all make mistakes. How fast does she beat the manslaughter charge she might catch to try and keep things quiet?

CRUSTY MINGE posted:Iirc that guy was an auxiliary because he was so loving ancient. Ah yep. quote:The 2015 shooting of Eric Harris occurred on April 2, 2015, when 44-year-old African-American Eric Courtney Harris was fatally shot during an undercover sting in Tulsa, Oklahoma,[1] as Harris ran from authorities unarmed.[2][3][4] While Harris was being subdued, Tulsa County Reserve Deputy Robert Charles "Bob" Bates, 73, allegedly confused his personal weapon, a Smith & Wesson .357 revolver, for a Model X26 Taser.[5] Bates shot Harris in the back when he was on the ground. According to the Tulsa County Sheriff's office, he immediately said afterwards, "Oh, I shot him! I'm sorry."[6] Bates was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison. Ugh it was even dumber. quote:It was later determined that Harris did not have a gun when he was tackled and shot. A sunglasses-camera video[7] shows his arms flailing as he runs. Bates was later charged with second-degree manslaughter.[8] The shooter only served about 1/3 of his sentence. That Works fucked around with this message at 19:55 on Apr 12, 2021 |

CommieGIR posted:I think its safer to say they don't need access to firearms if they cannot deal with them. "Training is only so effective" is such a poor excuse given how often this happens accidentally or on purpose. Separating the devices so that it's less likely that an officer is going to have both is a good control measure if they keep buying gun shaped tasers. Other changes that could work: opposite handed grips, activation buttons controlled by the thumb, different form factors. Police departments were private businesses, threats of lawsuits would force them to adapt. It's not entirely clear to me why that doesn't work against municipalities.

Godholio posted:Maybe it's the decade or so of similar bullshit that was in here before that's left a bad taste in my mouth for phrases like that. It's the people that won't shut the gently caress up about guns and base their entire identity around them that have zero issue with the police gunning down someone that might plausibly be armed and will use it as justification for the execution. They know it's not going to happen to them and they cheer it on. So most conservatives at this point.

On the one hand, clearly the statement wasn't meant to be all-encompassing. On the other, this thread often likes painting with a wide brush. Please move on.

"The second amendment crowd" includes a whole lot of non-conservatives now, and gun ownership expanded quite a bit over the past four years well beyond ^them. Edit: I'm good with moving on.
