I read the most recent Cradle book and it was pretty good. It's nice having Jai Chen/Jai Long involved again. I hope Lindon and Jai Long can get along; Lindon needs a male friend close to his age. It was interesting but realistic for Lindon's re-union with his home to be so bad, though I think that the awkwardness between him and his immediate family is mostly on him and that they'll get along fine once he's willing to open up with them (particularly with his mom and sister, who both seem pretty excited about the outside world). It's funny how apparently the Kazan Clan are literally the only clan/school in Sacred Valley that isn't awful. It was interesting seeing Elder Whisper at the end of the book, since throughout the book I was constantly thinking "what's up with Elder Whisper." I'm wondering if there will be a minor time skip at the beginning of the next book. It seems like Eithan has some ideas about starting their own clan/school and it's possible that a lot of the Sacred Valley artists are early enough in their cultivation that it's possible they haven't irreversibly hosed their advancement yet (since I think Orthos mentioned "redoing" Kelsa's Iron body). I feel bad for Meira. Her life is just complete misery.

Most isekais get around the whole "I brought a revolver" thing by the very obvious "Congrats you have 5-7 shots" and then you have a very expensive paperweight for at least a long while.

I just finished the final chapter of Reverend Insanity and I am now in withdrawal. The fact this series will never be finished most likely really sucks. While it had a lot of the generic plot point of xianxia the entire 'magic' system was really well done and an amazing way to limit things. What a ride.

uh, wow. 40k of cultivation has continued to cover various hard sci fi topics, but the most recent conflict has been against the ghost of a founding emperor. he pioneered a society based entirely on survival of the fittest among space traveling cultivators, with said empire being exactly as lovely as you'd expect. his scheme to completely seize power over the empire he founded which now has a lot of vested interests and power blocs that do not want him back in charge was to lure them all into one star system. then he used an ancient artifact that weaponizes suns to instead brainwash absolute loyalty to himself and his ideals using the sun as an amplifier. li yao, the mc, countered this by surrendering and revealing all (most) of his secrets. then at a critical moment in the brainwashing, his alter ego/malevolent space ghost flooded the information channel with porn deepfakes of the emperor of every kind with him in every role. so this high intensity brainwashing with the power of the sun was contaminated by a confusing lowbrow and obscene attack which disrupted the whole thing. this is such a strange story.

his love interest isn't a generic most beautiful woman in the world, either. she's a slightly older woman who he gets along with due to their mutual love of extreme sparring. the most recent hard sci fi topic it has covered is artificial intelligence. there are spontaneously generated information life forms which made human bodies for themselves and a simulated intelligence that has gotten infinitely close to true sentience via centuries of self modification and improvement. lots of time was given over to discussions about how they should relate to their creators and vice versa, which is made more interesting by how in this setting humans were also explicitly uplifted into sentience by a previous galactic civilization. i say sentience, but originally humans were straight up subject to asimov's three laws! they were meat robots developed from apes. this is such a strange story.

Sage Monarch finally finished and I can't fathom how that ever got popular. Literally no one does anything but the MC, there's no clever twists or really clever anything, and the ending was a huge wet fart of nothingness. Good riddance.
