I also managed to snag one of these before they sold out ~10 minutes after they went up. That cover art is gorgeous!

rare reasonably-priced repress alert: the first shins album is getting a very colorful 20th anniversary edition for only 19 bucks https://megamart.subpop.com/collections/pre-orders/products/the-shins_oh-inverted-world-20th-anniversary-remaster

kinda annoying though, since another recent repress is still available direct through sub pop (for $16) while both chutes too narrow and wincing the night way are sold out. hope i won't have to wait 2 and 6 years for reprints of those

Two parcels from Japan, had to buy a couple of bulk lots because there were a few specifics I wanted in them but they were cheap so just went for it. Most of it is probably the Japanese equivalent of Whipped Cream but it's still nice to have some of the classic singers like Hibari Misora.

The stuff I wanted

The what look like happy accidents

The chaff

The yellow cover in this one is apparently selling for 50USD+ because apparently the Japanese love disco covers of childrens songs? Condition is perfect including insert and OBI so I'm curious. The rest is just random stuff but with a few interesting looking album covers that I'm interested to see what's on it. I also have a soft spot for Enka so I don't mind having the others. Most of them are in fine condition, just need a clean. There are a few that will need to be chucked out though.

And the more targeted stuff. Top left I bought on a whim because I could find next to zero information about it but it's cover screams city pop to me, next to that is Omega Tribe, these are great because you can get them super cheap and feels like it's avoided the price increases of other city pop releases, top right is Jinpachi Nezu and below that it is Haruyuki Mizuguchi which is produced and features Tatsuro Yamashita but I can't find samples or anything anywhere which is strange considering he was such a big part of it. The other two are Yahyel, James Blake sounding synthpop and Tendre, modern pop/funk/soul

These are probably my top three RN, and have been for the last year. They are all surf rock/synth pop/indie kinda vibes. They are DIY bedroom pop, like Tame Impala--produce all the music at home on their own, tour with a band.

CASTLEBEAT is amazing, and draws a lot of inspiration from retro gaming/8bit poo poo. Just give a listen, you'll see what I mean. He just dropped his 3rd LP, and owns a small indie synth pop kinda label called Spirit Goth records. Don't love the 3rd one as much as the first two, but gently caress, I really love the first two.

This is my favorite song by him. I'd also like to give an honorable mention to Jaded Juice Riders, his much lesser known unappreciated side project, which I think he dubs lo-fi surf rock. I think he started it with a friend in HS. They don't have vinyl, though, just sold out cassettes.

Day Wave (my boy JP, Jackson Phillips)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YyZI-bGg5k

He's on the twitch grift now. His music really helped me through some stuff. He does a New Order cover of ceremony, that is probably in my top 3 favorite songs of all time

Dayglow, super up and coming. Dropped out of college to pursue music. Not a huge fan of the releases for his new 2nd album (has a much cleaner pop sound, the natural progression of indie music), but, his first, Fuzzybrain, will forever be an iconic album. Talk about summer vibes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ly_k5L98k0

This is him in HS, I believe. Just check out that energy. Dayglow, coming to a Starbucks and Forever 21 near you.

Awesome recs, man. Really digging all of this, especially Day Wave with the great telecaster sounds.

I know what you did last summer, and frankly I am displeased.
I never understood why people care enough out obi strips to pay extra money for a record that still has one. If I bought a record that had the strip I'd keep it but if there were two copies of the same album in front of me and the one without the obi was as little as five bucks cheaper that's the one I'd grab.

It's just like those blu-ray weirdos with the slip covers.

I do enjoy my CD copy of Very by Pet Shop Boys more so for the solid orange case with lego like round bumps on it. Half the reason I bought of Montreal's Hissing Fauna on CD is because it came in a digi pack that unfolds from the center. I keep a CD from a band called Menomena because it's a flip book.

I dunno guys CDs may have the edge on gimmick packaging.

This is a fantastic gimmick. Wow. I worked in a college radio station in the 90s and we had a wall of fame/shame for gimmick CDs. Wish I could remember them all. Weird shapes, jewel cases with fur on them, blinky poo poo, 3d moving images with prisims in the plastic, one that was somehow a bottle of motor oil. . .

Some CDs have secret tracks you can hear if you hold down the reverse or forward buttons. The ones I know about are Nevermind and a couple of David Cross albums because I have those. Not all copies of Nevermind have the secret track it's just the earliest copies.

Shellac 78s need a different kind of stylus than what a vinyl record uses so playing a 78 on something with a stylus meant for vinyl LPs can gently caress up the stylus and probably the record.

Also, if you happen to have an ATLP-120 it has a 78 speed you just have to press the 33 and 45 buttons at the same time.

edit: I just realized that newer models might not have the 78 speed but mine does because its older.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum do that on every track of Of Natural History and my CD player would read out as negative countdowns (starting at, like, -32) before flipping to the next track.

Skinny Puppy's Last Rights on CD had some pretty severe quality control issues and the album actually started at like -1:32 or something, and each track transition was off by the same amount.

They had another album where the CD was initially released with Dolby noise reduction applied. It sounded very muffled compared to the re-release.

Then yet another album had some copies where the music was actually from another band.

Then finally their first live album had no track divisions at all in the initial pressings, just one hour long track. That might have been intentional though, not really sure.

All of these issues were fixed the digital release/later pressings.
