I drove through Pekin once (like 6 years ago now but I doubt it's changed much), and the thing that got me is that many small Illinois towns (especially in the north half of the state) have managed to turn their main street into a really inviting shopping area with tourist trap boutiques and some cool restaurants. Pekin looked like it went "nah, boarded up is the style we prefer." I guess no one there realized if you make your place a good day trip for Chicago yuppies it's a license to print money.

I live in a very boomer neighborhood in Central IL and there are some Pritzker Sucks and support are police signs, but even before the election there weren't any Trump flags I can remember

Last time I was there, there's the big milsurp store, a couple other gun/pawn shops, a bait shop, a liquor store . . . The far side of the milsurp store has a cockpit/nosecone of a helicopter on it: It's just a delightful place. For, uh, certain values of the word. Prices are good though, so I just make sure not to talk to anyone and grunt and/or laugh in a noncommittal fashion to anything political. Been a LONG time since I was in there, though.

Moved out to Portland from Chicago at the beginning of the year and my gay husband and I were at mount hood, about an hour out from portland, and a clerk mentioned he was moving back to Illinois. Unfortunately, my partner engaged—with mentioning the Chicago part in his defense—but the clerk-from-y’all-can-guess-where launched into a five minute rant about how portlanders, blm, antifa, and liberals leftists socialists and communists, oh my, were ruining Oregon and he couldn’t wait to get back to “corn and rednecks.” Feel like he should move to a state without any real urban presence, but maybe he was missing being racist while ranting about his state’s city?

I’ve spent a lot of time in NW IL because I have family there, and I’ve never really noticed anything crazy racist that way. Like I can’t remember any confederate flags or barns painted with crazy poo poo. Maybe things really do change south of 80.

I think Peoria, for me, died when Richard's closed. Those burgers were better than they had any right to be.

Bradley's got a speech team that should be shut down for like, six hundred illegal things. A sibling went there, failed out, and took my whole college fund with them is the real reason though lol. One world has the only not terrible coffee in the area. If I'm getting food in Peoria it's probably at the Avantis right across from it.

From what I've heard, the schools have been getting resegregated ever since the lawsuit ended.

Pontius Pilate posted:Thought the Illinois quiz bowl community was odd, but I have no idea what any of this means Oh, speech is combining the standoff attitude of debate and the willingness to claw each other's eyes out of theater. Bradley Speech is a collegiate speech team out of the Peoria college. They think of themselves as the Notre Dame of speech. They were up until 2018 run by known sex pests and were pretty awful to their students. The program holds a yearly college and yearly high school speech tournament named after former directors of the Bradley program. They call themselves BUST (Bradley University Speech Team) And when I say "like Notre Dame" I mean they unironically say "#BUSTTILDUST" in front of other people. None of this even begins to explain speech but this is the IL politics thread not the IL forensics thread.

You have to 'do your time' in the party and work your way up over years (barring the rare outsider election), and in Chicago that means you work for corrupt people, and you can't play in the mud without getting a little on yourself. They don't want reformers in office cuz then poo poo like this happens, so they groom people who are like themselves, shut out what do-gooders and crusaders they can, and the cycle continues.

Alternately, these are the greedy dumb old fucks who do stuff on their phones because they don't understand technology and privacy.
